Program Overview:
Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez is launching the D2 Mural Project, a creative small business support initiative that will provide five District 2 businesses with a custom indoor mural, painted personally by the Councilman at no cost to the business. This initiative is designed to uplift local entrepreneurs, celebrate District 2’s culture and stories, and bring art directly into neighborhood spaces where people gather every day. Each selected business will collaborate with Councilman McKee-Rodriguez on a mural concept that reflects the business’s identity, values, and connection to the community.
Program Highlights:
Five businesses selected; One indoor mural per business; No cost to participating businesses; Murals painted by Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez; Collaborative design process; Optional photo/video documentation for storytelling and promotion
Eligibility:
Businesses must: be physically located within City Council District 2; operate from a brick-and-mortar location; be independently owned (no national chains or franchises); have an indoor wall space suitable for a mural; and be open to allowing photography or video of the mural process.
Scoring Criteria:
Community Connection (30%) - Demonstrated ties to District 2, including service to residents, local hiring, or community involvement; Business Story & Vision (25%) - Clear, compelling narrative about the business and thoughtful ideas for the mural’s theme; Community Impact & Visibility (20%) - Businesses that serve as gathering spaces or have strong community presence; Space Feasibility (15%) - Safe, accessible indoor wall space appropriate for a mural; and Geographic & Business Diversity (10%) - Ensuring selections reflect different neighborhoods and types of businesses across District 2.
Timeline
Applications open for a limited period; Selected businesses notified following review; Murals completed on a rolling basis over 3-6 months.
