In this 1.5 day intensive, we’ll go through all aspects of making a full spectrum of dyes from wild mushrooms and lichens. We will start the workshop by looking over a selection of collections left over from the conference. As we tour the specimens, we will talk about what makes a mushroom species a likely dye candidate. We will then take a short stroll through the forest and talk about habitat, and where to look for dyers. We will head back to the studio and test a couple of specimens for color potential and the optimum route to color, before retreating for the night.
In the morning, we’ll reconvene in the dye studio and start to work. One by one, we’ll examine all of the major groups of fungal dyes, eventually revealing a full spectrum of color. Through hands-on experience you will get a thorough grasp of how to explore, develop and illuminate the various unique color groups found in mushroom and lichens. In the afternoon, we will design a silk scarf using resist techniques, and you will have the opportunity to exhaust the dyes with your own wool or silk fiber. Bring washed wool, in one ounce measurements, and containers to take home left-over dye.
**There is a $40 supply fee payable to the instructor in the beginning of class.**
**If you are also registered for Alissa's Pre-Conference Intensive, the second supply fee will be $20**
