Taevia Norris, Books and Brown Sugar Co. will have Zora Neale Hurston books available.
Growing up, I often felt like I didn’t quite belong. My school reading lists were filled with stories that didn’t reflect me, my community, or my culture. I found myself searching for characters who looked like me, who lived with joy, and who celebrated their identities unapologetically. But those stories were hard to find.
Books and Brown Sugar Co. was born out of this need — to amplify Black and Brown voices, create access to diverse stories, and offer a space where we can see ourselves reflected positively in books. It wasn’t until college that I discovered Black stories centered on joy and greatness, reshaping my perspective. I believe that diverse narratives have the power to change how we view marginalized communities.
This isn’t just about selling books; it’s about cultivating a community. A community where literature meets culture, and every story serves as a reminder that our voices matter. We pair thoughtfully selected books with themed apparel and create immersive experiences that celebrate the beauty of our narratives.
Books and Brown Sugar Co. is a love letter to all of us who grew up feeling unseen. Together, we’re rewriting the narrative and celebrating the power of our stories.
Books and Brown Sugar Co is a woman owned bookish brand for people that aim to amplify black literature. We were created to increase representation and provide a space for us to honor black authors. Our mission is to celebrate black voices by sharing our experiences, culture, and community perfectly curated through powerful books, apparel and literary events.
