Teacher, Parent & Audience Conduct
As KMA welcomes past medalists to return, adjudicators may recognize some contestants and their teachers. To ensure fairness and professionalism, teachers must remain at least 25 feet from their students before, during, and after performances once the student has entered the building. Any interaction with students on competition premises is strictly prohibited and may result in disqualification. In addition, all contestants will remain partially anonymous. For example, a contestant named Mickey Mouse would be identified as MMG1–4 (initials plus division).
Parents may record their child’s performance provided they are seated at least four rows behind the adjudicator. Cameras may not be placed to the right or left of the adjudicator, and all attendees must remain a minimum of 10 feet from the judge’s station. Teachers may not sit next to, speak with, or otherwise communicate with their students inside the competition room.
General Competition Rules
• Contestants must check in 20 minutes prior to their scheduled performance
• Each contestant must provide their own accompanist.
• All performances must be memorized, except for Chamber performances.
• Each contestant must provide one copy of the score for the adjudicators.
• Contestants must arrive fully warmed up; no practice rooms are available.
• Voice contestants:
◦ Musical theater selections are not permitted.
◦ All selections must be sung in their original languages.
◦ If performing two selections, the second must contrast in style and language.
• Duet performers:
◦ Piano duo repertoire is limited to four-hand piano only.
• When the allotted performance time has elapsed, adjudicators will stop evaluating.
• All adjudicators’ decisions are final and may not be appealed.
