  • On August 18, 2006 the Perry County Farm Bureau Young Leaders lost not only a member, but a true friend. Tyler Lee Smith was killed in an automobile accident that left the Young Leaders in a state of shock. Tyler was a very active member in the Perry County Farm Bureau Young Leaders. Three days before the fateful accident, Tyler helped the Young Leaders place second in the Young Leader's Agri-Quiz Bowl at the Springfield State Fair. After Tyler's death, Mark and Kim Smith (Tyler's parents) approached the Young Leaders with the idea of starting a scholarship in Tyler's memory. Money was given by family, friends, and businesses to establish the scholarship. With the generous amount of money brought in, the Young Leaders established a scholarship to be given out each year in the amount of $1,000 dollars. Now in its seventeenth year, the scholarship has been increased to $1,500. The recipient of the scholarship should provide strong leadership goals in promoting agriculture. In addition, a special preference will be given to qualified applicants in their second year of college and students who are majoring in Ag Production or Ag Mechanics at Rend Lake Community College.
