Tax Amendment FAQ
What is a tax amendment?
A tax amendment corrects errors or omissions on a previously filed tax return, such as income, credits, deductions, or filing status.
When do I need to amend my return?
You may need an amendment if you forgot income, received additional tax documents, claimed incorrect dependents, or missed credits or deductions.
How long does an amendment take?
Federal amended returns typically take up to 20 weeks to process. State processing times vary and are outside our control.
Will I receive an additional refund?
Amendments may result in an additional refund or a balance due. Refunds are issued only after the amendment is processed.
Can you amend prior-year returns?
Yes. Most amendments can be filed within three years of the original filing date or two years from the date the tax was paid.
Can you amend a return prepared elsewhere?
Yes. We can amend returns prepared by another tax professional or self-prepared returns with proper documentation.
What documents are needed?
You’ll need your original return and any new or corrected tax documents related to the change.
How much does an amendment cost?
Fees vary based on the year(s) amended and the complexity. Pricing is provided before work begins.
Is payment required upfront?
Yes. All amendment fees are due prior to filing and are non-refundable once work has started.
Does an amendment increase audit risk?
No. Filing an amendment does not automatically increase your chances of an audit.
Important Note
Filing an amendment does not stop penalties or interest on unpaid balances.
