Dogs need time and patience after they have left the shelter as they might howl, bark, or be destructive and not potty or leash trained. Are you willing and able to work through any issues like separation anxiety, potty training, leash training, and are you willing to crate-train the dog if needed?*

a) Are the cats used to dogs? Have they ever been around dogs in the home?

b) Can you safely separate the dog from the cats — ideally with two doors or at least one room in between as a safety buffer? And if they don’t get along, are you able to continue fostering while keeping them safely separated until a new foster is found? (Please keep in mind this could take several days or even weeks.)

c) Are you willing and able to slowly and carefully introduce them? This usually takes a lot of time, patience, and effort — often weeks or even months. Some dogs might never get along with cats.
