  • The Chicago Metropolitan Chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) is pleased to offer the Areanah Preston Scholarship Award to students who pursue an academic degree with the intent to work within criminal justice or law enforcement profession.

    Mission Statement

    NOBLE has created this scholarship to advance the educational goals of African American females who seek careers in law enforcement or criminal justice.  In supporting the educational aspirations of African American females, NOBLE seeks to meet its overall goals of increasing the number of African American females in law enforcement while enhancing their career opportunities.  

  • This scholarship is available to African American female high school seniors or college/university undergraduates who are Illinois residents.

    • College/University applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited college or university and have completed 12 units of college study prior to award disbursement. Award disbursement requires that you provide proof of class enrollment (from Bursar’s Office) as a full-time student at an accredited college or university, and an official transcript prior to receiving award.
    • High school applicants must receive a high school diploma in the 2025-2026 academic school year. Award disbursement requires that award recipients provide proof of acceptance and class enrollment at an accredited academic institution (from Bursar’s Office) and an official high school transcript prior to receiving award.
    • All applicants must pursue an academic degree with the intent to work within a criminal justice or law enforcement profession.
    • Residency:  Must be an Illinois Resident
    • Gender:  Female Identify
    • Race:  African American
    • All applicants must pursue an academic degree in criminal justice or law enforcement related profession.
    • Applicants must have a minimum, cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
    • All applicants must complete the application and submit all required documents electronicly NOT LATER THAN April 15, 2026. Applications received after the deadline will not be accepted. Incomplete, or illegible application packets will not be reviewed or considered for awards.
    • Application Process: Applications may be obtained from and submitted through the NOBLE Chicago Metro Chapter’s website: www.noblechicago.org
  • Eligibility Criteria

  • The application packet must be complete and include the following:

    • A 650 to 750-word essay; typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins and 12-point font. Essays should incorporate this year’s scholarship theme of “Answering the Call:  My Path to a Career in Law Enforcement.”  Your essay should address: Applicants should describe their motivation for pursuing law enforcement, their commitment to service and integrity, and how the Areanah Preston Scholarship supports their goals and honors her legacy.  You must author and prepare your own essay.
    • A copy of your current transcript as proof of your grade point average. An unofficial copy is acceptable for the initial application process; however, an official transcript is required prior to award disbursement.
    • Two (2) letters of recommendation in support of your application. Letters must be from a current or former faculty/teacher, student support personnel (i.e., school counselor or advisor), or a local community leader not related to the applicant.
    • A current, non-copyrighted photograph (a solo, head shot) for use in the event of selection. Photos will not be returned.

  • Evaluation Criteria

  • All applicants will be evaluated based on academic achievements, community involvement, experience, extracurricular activities, personal recommendations, written essay, and your ability to comply with all elements of the application process in a timely manner.

    NOBLE’s evaluation of the applicant regarding each criteria shall be made at its sole and complete discretion. Awardees will be selected by the scholarship committee and approved by The Chapter Executive Board. Applicants who are selected to receive an award will be notified in writing. Awardees will be honored during The Chapter’s Scholarship Event in the late spring.
