    Medical expenses

If you paid for healthcare expenses, you may be able to claim them as eligible medical expenses on your income tax return.

The medical expenses include a wide range of products, procedures and services, such as: medicin subscribed, optometrist, dental care, chiropractor, health insurance, etc

Ensure that you have all receipts in the event of a CRA audit.

You can claim medical expenses from previous year, given that it has not been claimed previously. You are allowed to pick your 12 month period (to maximize claim). As long as the end of the 12 months falls within the tax year you are reporting, you are free to choose the best time frame for your situation.

You may deduct only amount of your total medical expenses that exceed 3% of your income.  Sample: if total income is $30,000 - you need to have receipts which total is higher than $900.

    Auto expense form

You can deduct expenses you incur to run a motor vehicle you use to earn business income.

If, for instance, 60% of your mileage is for business purposes (40% personal), you can deduct 60% of the expenses related to the vehicle.

Motor vehicle expenses include interest on loans to purchase automobiles, capital cost allowance, automobile leasing costs, and operating expenses such as fuel, oil, maintenance and repairs, licence and insurance costs, and car washes.

Parking costs are not included as motor vehicle expenses

Allowable motor vehicle expenses – Salaried employee expenses

You can deduct your motor vehicle expenses if you meet all of the following conditions:

    • You were normally required to work away from your employer's place of business or in different places.
    • Under your contract of employment, you had to pay your own motor vehicle expenses.
    • You are not considered to have paid your own motor vehicle expenses if your employer reimburses you or you refuse a reimbursement or reasonable allowance from your employer.
    • You did not receive a non-taxable allowance for motor vehicle expenses.
Generally, an allowance is non-taxable when it is based solely on a reasonable per-kilometre rate.
    • You keep with your records a copy of Form T2200, Declaration of Conditions of Employment, which has been completed and signed by your employer.

To qualify, your employer must sign form T2200 confirming that you needed the tools for employment.

    Home Office expense form

You can deduct expenses for the business use of a workspace in your home, as long as you meet one of the following conditions:

    • It is your principal place of business
    • You use the space only to earn your business income
    • You use it on a regular and ongoing basis to meet your clients, customers, or patients

You can deduct part of your maintenance costs such as heating, home insurance, electricity, and cleaning materials. You can also deduct part of your property taxes, mortgage interest, and capital cost allowance (CCA).

If you use part of your home for both your business and personal living, calculate how many hours in the day you use the rooms for your business, and then divide that amount by 24 hours. Multiply the result by the business part of your total home expenses. This will give you the household cost you can deduct. If you run the business for only part of the week or year, reduce your claim accordingly.
