FluMist® Nasal Flu Vaccine – Child Eligibility Check
  • FluMist® Nasal Flu Vaccine Clinics – Tasmania

Needle-free flu vaccination for children, delivered by experienced nurse immunisers

Tasmania Vaccine Solutions was established by a local Tasmanian nurse to improve access to safe, timely immunisation services for families across the state.

These clinics provide another option for parents who would prefer their child to recieve the FluMist nasal influenza vaccine, a needle-free alternative for eligible children.

Influenza vaccination continues to be available through GPs, pharmacies, community immunisation providers, and the National Immunisation Program where applicable.  These clinics are intended to complement existing services by offering an additional choice for Tasmanian families.

All clinics are delivered by a small team of experienced Authorised Nurse Immunisers.

    Our nurses have:

    • Experience in childhood immunisation
    • Extensive experience delivering large-scale vaccination programs
    • Current Working With Vulnerable People registrations
    • Strong backgrounds working with children and families

Clinics are professionally run, nurse-led, and designed to be calm, efficient, and child-friendly.

    Before You Book

Before booking, you’ll be asked to complete a short eligibility check.

This form is not a consent form.

It simply helps confirms whether your child may be eligible to safely receive the FluMist® nasal influenza vaccine under the clinic screening guidelines.

If your child appears eligible, you will then be able to:

    • Choose a clinic location and appointment time
    • Complete payment to secure your booking
    • Recieve confirmation and pre-clinic information

The formal consent form will be emailed to you after booking and must be completed prior to your appointment.

All vaccinations are recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) so your child's vaccination history remains complete and accessible through Medicare.

Families are encouraged to speak with their health care provider if they have any questions about influenza vaccination options for their child.

  • FluMist® is a needle-free flu vaccine given as a gentle nasal spray.

It contains a weakened (live attenuated) influenza virus that helps the immune system build protection against the flu.

For many children, it’s a more comfortable alternative to an injection.

    • No needles
    • One spray in each nostril
    • Approved by the Therapeutic Goods Association for children aged 2 to under 18 years

    Age eligibility

In Australia, the nasal influenza vaccine FluMist® is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for use in children and adolescents aged 2 years and over, up to under 18 years of age.

While nasal influenza vaccines are approved for a broader age range in some other countries, use in Australia must follow the current TGA-approved indication.

Until approval is extended by the TGA, FluMist® cannot be provided to adults aged 18 years or older.

The standard injectable influenza vaccine is widely available through GP clinics and community pharmacies for people outside this age range.

Please seek advice from your GP or immunisation provider regarding alternative influenza vaccines.  An injectable influenza vaccine may still be suitable.

    Important allergy information

FluMist® is a live attenuated influenza vaccine and contains egg protein, gelatin, and trace amounts of gentamicin.

Children with a history of severe allergic reactions (including anaphylaxis) to any of these components should not receive this vaccine.

    Flu Mist Information

FluMist® contains gelatin derived from pork (porcine gelatin).

Some families may wish to consider this for cultural, religious, or personal reasons.

Important: immune system / live vaccine information

FluMist® is a live attenuated influenza vaccine. Live vaccines are not recommended for children with weakened immune systems due to medical conditions or treatments (e.g., cancer treatment, transplant medications, high-dose steroids, symptomatic HIV).

This is because their immune response may not safely contain the vaccine virus.

If your child has a weakened immune system, please do not proceed with FluMist® and speak with your GP or immunisation provider about alternative influenza vaccines.

Important medication information (aspirin and salicylates)

FluMist® is a live attenuated influenza vaccine.
Children and adolescents who take aspirin or salicylate-containing medicines are generally advised not to receive live vaccines due to the association between aspirin use and a rare but serious condition called Reye’s syndrome, which can affect the brain and liver.

For this reason, FluMist® is not suitable for children who are currently taking aspirin or salicylates.

Please do not proceed and seek advice from your GP or immunisation provider about alternative influenza vaccines, such as the injectable flu vaccine.

Parents and carers who would like more information can read the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) review below.

  • Asthma and wheezing – important information

FluMist® is a live nasal influenza vaccine.
It is not recommended for children with severe asthma or those who are currently wheezing, as this may increase the risk of breathing difficulties.

Severe asthma generally refers to asthma that is poorly controlled, requires frequent oral steroids, or has resulted in recent hospital or emergency care.
Current wheezing means noisy breathing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath in the past few days, even if symptoms are usually mild.

If this applies to your child, please do not proceed and seek advice from your GP or immunisation provider. An injectable influenza vaccine may be more suitable.

The nasal spray flu vaccine has been used safely in children in the UK for many years. Some of the information used for screening and consent is based on this well-established UK guidance, to help ensure clear and evidence-based decisions while this program is newer in Australia.

  • Please do not proceed with this booking.

Based on the information provided, FluMist® is not suitable for your child.

Please seek advice from your GP or immunisation provider regarding alternative influenza vaccines.  An injectable influenza vaccine may still be suitable.

Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is an antiviral medication used to treat or help prevent influenza, particularly in children and adults at higher risk of complications. Because the nasal spray flu vaccine contains a weakened live virus, antiviral medicines like Tamiflu can interfere with how the nasal vaccine works and reduce its effectiveness. For this reason, the nasal spray flu vaccine cannot be given if a child is currently taking Tamiflu or has taken it recently. In these situations, an injected (non-live) flu vaccine may be recommended instead, or vaccination may be delayed, depending on timing and individual circumstances.

Timing between Tamiflu and the nasal spray flu vaccine

    • Tamiflu should NOT be taken within 48 hours before the nasal spray flu vaccine
    • Tamiflu should NOT be taken for 14 days after the nasal spray flu vaccine

  • Important information about household contacts

FluMist® is a live, weakened influenza vaccine.

There is a small potential for the vaccine virus to be passed to others. For this reason, it’s recommended that people who receive FluMist® avoid close contact, where possible, with severely immunocompromised individuals (for example, someone who has had a bone marrow transplant and requires protective isolation) for 1–2 weeks after vaccination.

If this applies to your household, an injected flu vaccine is usually the safer option.

FluMist® Product Information – Australian prescribing details

  • Based on your response, your child is not eligible to receive the FluMist® nasal influenza vaccine within this clinic setting.

Children with certain long-term medical conditions require individual medical assessment before receiving a live attenuated influenza vaccine.

Please speak with your GP or usual healthcare provider to discuss the most appropriate influenza vaccination option for your child.

  • Based on your response, your child is not eligible to receive the nasal spray influenza vaccine at this clinic.

A diagnosed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, or an opening between the brain/spinal fluid and the nose or mouth, is a contraindication to the nasal spray influenza vaccine.

Please speak with your GP or immunisation provider to discuss appropriate influenza vaccination options.

Other influenza vaccines may still be suitable.

  • Based on the information provided, the nasal spray influenza vaccine is not suitable in this situation.

Pregnancy is a contraindication to the live nasal spray influenza vaccine.

Please speak with a GP or immunisation provider to discuss appropriate influenza vaccination options.

Influenza vaccination is strongly recommended during pregnancy. While the nasal spray vaccine is not suitable, the injected influenza vaccine is safe and recommended.

  • Thank you for letting us know.

Live vaccines should not be given within 4 weeks of each other.

Based on your response, your child’s nasal spray influenza vaccination will need to be delayed.

Please book once 4 weeks have passed since the last live vaccine, or speak with your GP or immunisation provider for advice.

  • Thank you for completing the eligibility check.

Your child’s eligibility will be reviewed again on the day by our Authorised Nurse Immunisers as part of routine clinical safety checks.

Please select the clinic location that best suits you to book and complete payment.

After booking, you will receive an email containing the formal consent form, which must be completed prior to your appointment.

A separate consent form is required for each person attending the clinic.
