Needle-Free Nasal Flu Vaccine – Child Eligibility Check
  • Needle Free Nasal Flu Vaccine Clinics – Tasmania

Needle-free flu vaccination for children, delivered by experienced nurse immunisers

Tasmania Vaccine Solutions was established by a local Tasmanian nurse to improve access to safe, timely immunisation services for families across the state.

These clinics provide another option for parents who would prefer their child to recieve a needle-free nasal influenza vaccine option.

Influenza vaccination continues to be available through GPs, pharmacies, community immunisation providers, and the National Immunisation Program where applicable.  These clinics are intended to complement existing services by offering an additional choice for Tasmanian families.

All clinics are delivered by a small team of experienced Authorised Nurse Immunisers.

    Our nurses have:

    • Experience in childhood immunisation
    • Extensive experience delivering large-scale vaccination programs
    • Current Working With Vulnerable People registrations
    • Strong backgrounds working with children and families

Clinics are professionally run, nurse-led, and designed to be calm, efficient, and child-friendly.

    Before You Book

Before booking, you’ll be asked to complete a short eligibility check.

This form is not a consent form.

It simply helps confirms whether your child may be eligible to safely receive the nasal influenza vaccine under the clinic screening guidelines.

If your child appears eligible, you will then be able to:

    • Choose a clinic location and appointment time
    • Complete payment to secure your booking
    • Recieve confirmation and pre-clinic information

The formal consent form will be completed on the day of the clinic.

Other family members can also choose to have their flu vaccination at the same time.

All vaccinations are recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) so your child's vaccination history remains complete and accessible through Medicare.

Families are encouraged to speak with their health care provider if they have any questions about influenza vaccination options for their child.

Based on the information provided, a needle-free nasal influenza vaccine may not be suitable for your child.

We recommend seeking advice from your GP or immunisation provider regarding alternative influenza vaccine options.

    Age eligibility
In Australia, a needle-free nasal influenza vaccine is registered for use in children aged 2 years to under 18 years.

Use in Australia must follow current approved indications and clinical guidelines.

This vaccine is not currently available for adults aged 18 years or older.

The standard injectable influenza vaccine is widely available through GP clinics and community pharmacies for people outside this age range.

  • 2. Has your child ever had a severe allergic reaction (for example, anaphylaxis) to any of the following?
  •

Please do not proceed with this booking.

Based on the information provided, a needle-free nasal influenza vaccine may not be suitable for your child.

Please seek advice from your GP or immunisation provider regarding alternative influenza vaccines. An injectable influenza vaccine may still be appropriate.

    Important allergy information
This vaccine is a live attenuated influenza vaccine and may contain small amounts of egg protein, gelatin, and trace antibiotics.

Children with a history of severe allergic reactions (including anaphylaxis) to any of these components should not receive this type of vaccine.

    Additional information
This vaccine may contain gelatin derived from pork (porcine gelatin).

Some families may wish to consider this for cultural, religious, or personal reasons.

If you would like to read more about why gelatin is used in some vaccines, this independent resource may be helpful:

  • 3. Does your child have a weakened immune system due to a medical condition or treatment? (For example: cancer treatment, transplant medicines, high-dose steroids, symptomatic HIV)
  •

Please do not proceed with this booking.

Based on the information provided, a needle-free nasal influenza vaccine may not be suitable for your child.

Please seek advice from your GP or immunisation provider regarding alternative influenza vaccines.

Important: immune system / live vaccine information
The needle-free vaccine is a live attenuated influenza vaccine. Live vaccines are not recommended for children with weakened immune systems due to certain medical conditions or treatments (for example, cancer treatment, transplant medications, high-dose steroids, or symptomatic HIV).

This is because their immune system may not safely respond to a live vaccine.

If your child has a weakened immune system, please do not proceed and speak with your GP or immunisation provider about alternative influenza vaccine options.

  • 4. Is your child currently taking aspirin or salicylate-containing medicines?
  •

Please do not proceed with this booking.

Based on the information provided, a needle-free nasal influenza vaccine may not be suitable for your child.

Please seek advice from your GP or immunisation provider regarding alternative influenza vaccines. An injectable influenza vaccine may still be appropriate.

Important medication information (aspirin and salicylates)
The needle-free nasal influenza vaccine is a live attenuated influenza vaccine.

Children and adolescents who take aspirin or salicylate-containing medicines are generally advised not to receive live vaccines due to the association between aspirin use and a rare but serious condition called Reye’s syndrome, which can affect the brain and liver.

For this reason, this type of vaccine is not suitable for children who are currently taking aspirin or salicylates.

Please do not proceed and seek advice from your GP or immunisation provider about alternative influenza vaccine options, such as the injectable flu vaccine.

    Further information
Parents and carers who would like more information can refer to guidance from the Therapeutic Goods Administration on aspirin use and Reye’s syndrome.

  • 5. Does your child have severe asthma or currently have wheezing?
  • Asthma and wheezing – important information
A needle-free nasal influenza vaccine is a live attenuated influenza vaccine.

It is not recommended for children with severe asthma or those who are currently wheezing, as this may increase the risk of breathing difficulties.

Severe asthma generally refers to asthma that is poorly controlled, requires frequent oral steroids, or has resulted in recent hospital or emergency care.

Current wheezing means noisy breathing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath in the past few days, even if symptoms are usually mild.

If this applies to your child, please do not proceed with booking and seek advice from your GP or immunisation provider. An injectable influenza vaccine may be more suitable.

The nasal influenza vaccine has been used safely in children in the UK for many years. Some of the information used for screening and consent is based on this established UK guidance, to support clear and evidence-based decision-making while this program is newer in Australia.

  • 6. Has your child taken influenza antiviral medicines (such as Tamiflu or Relenza) in the past 48 hours?
  •

Please do not proceed with this booking.

Based on the information provided, a needle-free nasal influenza vaccine may not be suitable for your child.

Please seek advice from your GP or immunisation provider regarding alternative influenza vaccines. An injectable influenza vaccine may still be appropriate.

Antiviral medication (oseltamivir) and nasal influenza vaccine
Oseltamivir is an antiviral medication used to treat or help prevent influenza, particularly in children and adults at higher risk of complications.

Because the nasal influenza vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine, antiviral medicines such as oseltamivir can interfere with how the vaccine works and reduce its effectiveness.

For this reason, this type of vaccine should not be given if a child is currently taking antiviral medication or has taken it recently.

In these situations, an injected (non-live) influenza vaccine may be recommended instead, or vaccination may be delayed depending on timing and individual circumstances.

    Timing considerations
Antiviral medication should not be taken within 48 hours before receiving a nasal influenza vaccine
Antiviral medication should not be taken for 14 days after receiving a nasal influenza vaccine

  • 7. Has your child ever had Guillain–Barré syndrome within 6 weeks of a previous influenza vaccine?
  • Important: Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)

If your child has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) within 6 weeks of receiving a previous influenza vaccine, please do not proceed with booking.

We recommend seeking advice from your GP or immunisation provider to discuss the most appropriate vaccination options.

  • 8. Does your child live with someone who is severely immunocompromised?(For example: someone undergoing chemotherapy, a recent bone marrow transplant, or with severe immune deficiency)
  • Important information about household contacts
A needle-free nasal influenza vaccine is a live attenuated influenza vaccine.

There is a small potential for the vaccine virus to be passed to others. For this reason, it is recommended that people who receive this type of vaccine avoid close contact, where possible, with severely immunocompromised individuals (for example, someone who has had a bone marrow transplant and requires protective isolation) for 1–2 weeks after vaccination.

If this applies to your household, an injected (non-live) influenza vaccine is usually the safer option.

  • 9. Does your child have any long-term medical conditions or diagnoses that require ongoing care or medication? *
  • Thank you for completing the screening questions.

Based on your responses, your child may have a health condition that requires additional consideration before receiving a needle-free nasal influenza vaccine.

To support informed decision-making, please review the information guides below. These provide evidence-based information about nasal influenza vaccines and common health conditions including asthma, chronic medical conditions, and neurological conditions.

After reviewing this information, you can decide whether this type of vaccine may be suitable for your child.

If you are unsure or would like further advice, please discuss your child’s circumstances with your GP or trusted healthcare provider.

    Regular medications
The Australian Immunisation Handbook highlights a small number of medications that may require additional consideration when using a live attenuated influenza vaccine, including:

    • long-term aspirin therapy in children
    • medications that significantly suppress the immune system

If your child is taking medications in these categories, or if you are unsure whether a medication may affect immune function, it may be helpful to discuss this with your GP or usual healthcare provider before booking.

Most commonly used medications do not affect eligibility for this type of vaccine.

  • 10. Has your child been diagnosed with a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak or an opening between the brain/spinal fluid and the nose or mouth?
  • Please do not proceed with this booking.

Based on your responses, your child is not eligible to receive a needle-free nasal influenza vaccine at this clinic.

A diagnosed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, or an abnormal connection between the brain or spinal fluid and the nose or mouth, is a contraindication to this type of vaccine.

Please speak with your GP or immunisation provider to discuss appropriate influenza vaccination options.

Other influenza vaccines may still be suitable.

  • 11. Is the person being booked currently pregnant or possibly pregnant?
  • Based on the information provided, the nasal spray influenza vaccine is not suitable in this situation.

Pregnancy is a contraindication to the live nasal spray influenza vaccine.

Please speak with a GP or immunisation provider to discuss appropriate influenza vaccination options.

Influenza vaccination is strongly recommended during pregnancy. While the nasal spray vaccine is not suitable, the injected influenza vaccine is safe and recommended.

  • 12. Has your child received any live vaccines in the past 4 weeks, such as the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine or the chickenpox (varicella) vaccine?
  • Thank you for letting us know.

Live vaccines should not be given within 4 weeks of each other.

Based on your response, your child’s nasal spray influenza vaccination will need to be delayed.

Please book once 4 weeks have passed since the last live vaccine, or speak with your GP or immunisation provider for advice.

  • Thank you for completing the eligibility check.

Your child’s eligibility will be reviewed again on the day of the clinic by our Authorised Nurse Immunisers as part of routine clinical safety checks.

Please select your preferred clinic location to proceed with booking and payment.

A separate consent form is required for each person attending the clinic.
