Distinction in Research and Creative Works Application (2026)
BioSciences Department Requirements for the DIR Award
1. Please consult with your research advisor before making an application. All candidates must have a letter of recommendation or supporting statement from their research advisor.
2. Applicants must be in good academic standing in courses completed at Rice University.
3. The quality and quantity of the candidate’s research contributed substantially to research efforts in one or more labs (which do not have to be at Rice).
4. Competitive candidates’ research findings have commonly been disseminated through presentations at meetings and/or publications (papers and abstracts).
5. Candidates have customarily completed BIOS 401, NEUR 401, or HONS 470 and have concurrent registration in BIOS 402, NEUR 402, or HONS 471. Students performing exemplary research in other courses are also eligible for the award.
6. Candidates should list any previously earned undergraduate research awards.
7. The scope of the candidate’s research project should fall within one of the disciplines prescribed by the department degree programs. (For instance, projects where the primary research focus is on methods in engineering, computer science, or earth science should apply to the related departments.)

- Title and abstract (one page or less) of your research or creative work
  - Abstract must include introduction, purpose, methods, results, and conclusions. Alternatively, a research statement can be submitted.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Unofficial Transcript
- Recommendation letter or supporting statement from faculty advisor
  (An auto-generated email will be sent to the advisor’s email provided in the application, including instructions for submission.)
