The award recognises excellence in food microbiology, particularly among early career professionals and underscores the critical role of food microbiologists in ensuring a safe and sustainable food supply.

The key eligibility criteria for the award are:
• Early career professional - up to 10 years post Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) – Level 5 – 7
• Studying at an Australian University or TAFE OR employed in Australia in the area of food microbiology
• Financial member of the AIFST or an affiliated professional body (such as IAFP, or ASM)
