    • Check-In for Public Spay/Neuter
    • Surgery Assistant
    • Check-In for Public Vaccine Clinic

    Please note that we are looking to have volunteers start immediately.

    The following pages go over each role and give you the option to select whether or not you would like to join that team.

  • Ringworm Treatment & Cleaning Team

    Before you get started:

    Please read the details to make sure this is a role you want to do and can commit to:

    Role description:

    Ringworm Treatment volunteers help treat infected cats so they can go up for adoption. Ringworm is a minor fungal infection of the skin in humans, but in puppies, cats (and especially kittens) it is a more severe infection that takes weeks to treat. Volunteers play the essential roles of administering treatment and cleaning the kennel to reduce the chance of reinfection.


    Responsibilities: 

    • Set up designated area for treatments .
    • Handle animals safely and gently to ensure their comfort during treatment.
    • Administer lime sulfur baths to ringworm-positive puppies, cats or kittens. 
    • Collect samples for DTM plates as directed.
    • Perform visual exam to identify visible lesions and a Wood’s lamp exam to identify non-visible lesions.
    • Chart and track affected areas, noting hair loss or skin changes. 
    • Handle fomites (such as bedding, toys, etc.) that contain ringworm spores.
    • Separate laundry for infected animals from other laundry.
    • Ensure all housing materials are disinfected thoroughly and/or thrown away.
    • Ensure all bathed animals are placed into clean kennels after treatment. 
    • Clean and disinfect all cat-housing areas using Rescue Disinfectant. 
    • Follow all safety, handling, and infection-control protocols. 
    • Sweep and disinfect the treatment area floors.

    Available shifts:

    Both available shifts are at the Redwood City location. You can take one or both shifts. Volunteers are expected to come weekly.

    • Tuesdays, 4-6pm at Redwood City
    • Fridays, 4-6pm at Redwood City

    Training Required:

    • 2 sessions
    • Available sessions (all are 4-6pm at Redwood City):

    Qualifications:

    • At least 16 years old.
    • Able to commit to 4 months of weekly volunteering.
    • Comfortable working with infectious animals.
    • Comfortable with strong smells (lime-sulfur) and wearing PPE (gown, gloves, shoe covers).

  • Check-In for Public Spay/Neuter Team

    Role Description

    Help our medical team by assisting with our Spay and Neuter surgery check-ins! This role is vital to ensuring a smooth and organized start to the clinic day. Responsibilities include greeting clients, verifying paperwork, labeling carriers, confirming patient identification, and helping maintain a calm, safe environment for both animals and their guardians.  

    Resposibilities

    • Greet clients and their animals upon arrival for surgery appointments in a friendly and professional manner.
    • Assist clients with completing or reviewing necessary intake forms and paperwork.
    • Confirm patient information, including pet name, species, sex, and any special instructions.
    • Label carriers and/or cages clearly with patient identification.
    • Help maintain an orderly check-in flow to minimize stress for animals and clients.
    • Communicate with the veterinary team regarding special cases, concerns, or behavioral observations.
    • Provide general assistance to staff as needed during the check-in period.

    Available Shifts

    Both available shifts are at the Palo Alto location. You can take one or both shifts. Volunteers are expected to come weekly.

    • Tuesdays, 7:30-9:00am
    • Thursdays, 7:30-9:00am

    Training Required

    • 2 sessions
    • Available sessions (all are from 7:30-9:00am at Palo Alto)
      • Thursday, 1/15

    Qualifications

    • At least 18 years old.
    • Ability to volunteer weekly for at least 4 months
    • Comfortable working with cats and dogs.
    • Detail-oriented with the ability to accurately follow procedures and record information.
    • Interested in interacting with clients, staff, and other volunteers.
    • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs for animals in carriers. 
    • Spanish Speaking is a plus!

  • Surgery Assistant Team

    Role Description

    The Surgery Assistant volunteer plays a key role in supporting the medical team during surgical days. This position is ideal for individuals interested in animal care and veterinary procedures. Volunteers assist with maintaining a clean and organized surgery suite, preparing supplies, and supporting animal recovery. 

    Responsibilities

    • Open surgical packs and gloves using sterile technique 
    • Collect and transport dirty surgical instruments from the surgery suite 
    • Draw and label vaccines as directed 
    • Sanitize instruments and assemble surgical packs 
    • Prepare heating sources (discs, warmers) for recovering animals 
    • Change towels on surgery tables between patients 
    • Sweep and mop the surgery suite floors 
    • Clean the surgery suite at the end of shift 
    • Restock and organize supplies for the following day 
    • Prepare recovery kennels for post-operative patients 

    Available Shifts

    You can take one or both shifts. Volunteers are expected to come weekly.

    • Tuesdays, 9am-1pm at Palo Alto
    • Tuesdays, 9am-1pm at Redwood City
    • Fridays, 9am-1pm at Redwood City

    Training Required

    • 2 sessions
    • Available sessions:

    Qualifications

    • Must be at least 16 years old
    • Ability to volunteer weekly for at least 4 months.
    • Comfortable around animals of all sizes and temperaments.
    • Ability to follow instructions and clinic protocols.
    • Must be able to lift up to 30lbs.
    • Commitment to confidentiality and respectful communication.

  • Check-In for Public Vaccine Clinic Team

    Role Description

    The weekly low-cost vaccine clinic brings accessible, essential preventive care to the community. A big team of volunteers make this very busy clinic possible, and we're currently looking for a new Check-In volunteer to complete the team! 

    Responsibilities

    • Use pagers to call visitors to check-in and direct them to the vaccine stations.
    • Answer questions from visitors.
    • Meet adorable pets!

    Available Shifts

    • Wednesdays at Palo Alto, 9:15am-11:45am

    Training Required

    • 1 sessions

    Qualifications

    • At least 16 years old.
    • Ability to volunteer weekly for at least 4 months.

  • Please take a moment to read the volunteer agreement and sign below to certify that you have read and agree to the conditions set forth below.

    VOLUNTEER AGREEMENT

    • I am a volunteer performing services at Pets In Need. I understand and agree that these services are charitable in nature and entirely voluntary on my part, and that I will receive no remuneration of any kind for them.I will treat all animals, staff and other volunteers with respect.
    • I will abide by all PIN policies and procedures and follow the instructions of PIN staff.
    • I agree to immediately report any problems that arise to the appropriate PIN staff.
    • I will not share information about PIN policies and procedures with other animal welfare agencies.
    • I understand the potential safety risks of working with animals, and I attest that I am physically capable of carrying out my volunteer duties.
    • I understand that I may not bring friends or relatives with me while performing my volunteer duties.
    • Pets In Need has my permission to use any photographs taken of me to promote and publicize Pets In Need programs or events. I understand that all prints, negatives, and digital images become the sole property of Pets In Need and may be used without payment or prior notification.
    • I understand that PIN reserves the exclusive right to select or not to select potential volunteers at any point before services are provided or after placement in the program.
    • I understand that all data, materials, knowledge and information generated through, originating from, or having to do with PIN or persons associated with our activities is to be considered privileged and confidential and is not to be disclosed to any third party.

    VACCINATIONS

    • I understand that I may obtain Tetanus and Rabies vaccinations for myself if I choose, but that Pets In Need does not require it. I understand that because I will be handling animals, it is important to discuss these vaccinations with my physician. I release Pets In Need from all responsibility regarding my decision, and I understand that whatever decision I make is at my own risk.
    • Pets In Need highly recommends that staff and volunteers be vaccinated against COVID-19 but does not require it. I understand that my volunteer duties will put me in direct contact with other volunteers, staff, and visitors.
    • I understand the possible risk of bringing home illnesses from the shelter to personal pets or vice versa. Further, I understand that I can mitigate the risk by keeping my personal pets current on vaccinations.

    WAIVER OF STATE COMPENSATION BENEFIT

    • Pets In Need volunteers are not classified as “employees” and are therefore ineligible for Worker’s Compensation coverage for injuries that might be sustained while volunteering for Pets In Need.
    • I certify that I am covered by a personal, group, or employment related health and/or accidental insurance policy that will cover any injury that I might receive while volunteering on or premises for Pets In Need.

    WAIVER OF CLAIMS

    • Intending to be legally bound, I hereby for myself, my heirs, executors, and administrators, waive and release any and all rights and claims against the persons and organizations affiliated with Pets In Need. I further attest that I am physically fit to participate in this volunteer program.
    • I understand that Pets in Need is not responsible for providing compensation for any damages, including those caused by animals in its care. I am releasing Pets In Need from liability now and in the future for damages to persons or property caused by animals owned by Pets In Need.

    My signature below certifies that I have read this document and that I understand and agree to the conditions set forth above. This agreement is executed freely and voluntarily, and with full knowledge by the undersigned.
