    Program Description, Criteria, & Benefits

    Program Description

    Scholars to College is a free college-readiness program designed to prepare motivated, underrepresented first-generation students from Durham County for success at a four-year college or university. Students take part in fun, engaging programming at the Center and work closely with a College Readiness Counselor who supports them throughout high school. Counselors act as mentors, helping students set goals, build confidence, and prepare academically and personally for college. Students also receive support in planning meaningful summers that include academic programs, career exploration, jobs, or volunteer experiences.

    Who Should Apply? This program is a great fit for students who:

    • Live in Durham County, NC and attend a Durham County school
    • Come from families that meet federal income guidelines
    • Earn mostly A's and B's and show strong effort in school
    • Are curious, motivated, and serious about going to college
    • Show leadership, persistence, and positive charater
    • Have families willing to stay engaged through meetings and communication

    Program Benefits

    • Guidance through the college search and application process
    • Support building strong summer plans (programs, jobs, and volunteer experiences)

    Required Application Materials

    1. Application
    2. Teacher Recommendation (1): From a core teacher within the last year.
      • Confidential Teacher Recommendation Form online
    3. Grades: (see school counselor for assistance)
      • Report Cards from the past 3 years (including attendance)
      • Middle school End-of-Grade (EOG) test scores (for 8th grade applicants)
    4. Tax Returns: from the previous year

    Check your email consistently. Applicants will be contacted and informed of their application status. Applicants who will be considered for admissions will be invitied for an interview. 

    Applications will continue to be reviewed on a rolling basis until all slots are filled. Meeting the priority deadline increases your chances of securing your spot in the program. 

  • Scholars to College Program Income Eligibility Guidelines

     To determine whether your family qualifies for the Scholars to College program, please review your most recent (within the last year) Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) and compare it to the chart below.

    Eligibility Requirement

    Your family is eligible if your AGI is at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, based on your household size. 

    How to Check Your Income

    • AGI is found on Line 11 or IRS Form 1040
    • If you did not file taxes, submit a Benefit Verification Letter, W-2, or other proof of income for the previous year.

    Required Documentation

    All families who move forward in the process must provide a copy of their most recent tax return. Please black out Social Security Numbers and any bank account information. *Income documents will be used only to verify eligibility and will be securely destroyed after the application period.

    Scholars to College is a program that has an income eligibility requirement. We require that families report income to ensure we are in alignmnet with the mission and values of our organization. View the chart above to determine your family's eligiblity to submit an application. The infromation you provide below will be verified should your student be moved forward to the interview phase of the application process.

Please answer each of the following questions thoroughly. The Scholars to College program requires intense commitment on your part. Although Center staff will work with you and your family to plan around your other activities, your willingness and availability to regularly participate in evening and occasional weekend programs at the Center is key. The benefit for you is that you will be in an exciting program that will help you grow into a strong college candidate and pursue and achieve your goals.
