  • Online Extemp Qualifier Tournament

    February 20, 2026

Varsity (12-18 year olds) events offered at this tournament:

    • Extemporaneous Speaking

This tournament will be held online.

Please watch ASDA's Tournament Calendar page for the tournament schedule.  Generally, you should plan to attend the tournament from 4 - 10 pm CST.

  • To check if you have affiliated, you could search your email for "2025-2026 ASDA Family Affiliation".  All family affiliates should have received an email with that phrase in the subject line.

If you are not sure if you have affiliated, please email info@americanspeech.org to verify.

  • Your family must affiliate with ASDA and pay the affiliation fee before you can register for ASDA tournaments.  You can affiliate your family with ASDA here.

  • Parent or Guardian

  • Because competitors will frequently be competing at the same time their parents are judging, ASDA encourages parents to find alternative care for their children under the age of 8.

If a parent decides to bring children younger than competition age, the children will need to stay with their parents at all times. Younger children being confined to competition rooms while their parents are performing other duties has a high potential of becoming a poor experience for the younger child, the judges and the competitors in the room.

  • Adult Representative

  • Adults at tournaments serve a variety of purposes. They are chaperones, coaches, judges, staff, and emergency contacts for competitors. For this reason, it is essential that each competitor submit the name and contact information of their Adult Representative(s) when they register for each tournament.

Parents are the preferred Adult Representative. Parents can fill all the above roles for their competitors. When parents are at the tournament with their competitors, they should expect to judge more than half the rounds, assist with compliance concerns, and serve on staff. However, when a parent is not available to serve as the Adult Representative, parents may designate a different chaperone by filling out a release waiver and recruiting one or more additional adults willing to judge more than half the rounds at the tournament. Coaches can expect to chaperone their competitors, judge, serve on staff, and help their competitors find additional judges willing to fill the necessary judge opportunities. Coaches or other adults may serve as the designated adult representative for a maximum of four students.

Competitors will not be allowed to participate without a designated adult representative onsite the entire time the competitor is at the ASDA tournament or event.

  • I understand that the designated adult representative will be the onsite adult responsible for supervision of my minor participant, including any emergency that may arise. In the course of this supervision, I understand that ASDA will contact the designated adult representative directly with any scheduling, compliance, medical, or other concern.

  • Judges

  • Judge recruitment is essential for tournaments to run, and competitors need judges to compete and learn from their feedback.

Each family is required to provide at least one judge that will be available for half the tournament rounds. Usually, this requirement is filled by a parent or a designated adult representative. This judge will be pre-assigned to several rounds and will be asked to judge both debate and speech events. Parents of varsity competitors may watch their children only during periods when they are not assigned to judge.

In addition to parent judges, each competitor is required to recruit at least one community judge. We need many community judges to enhance the quality of tournaments and feedback to students. Competitors should invite adults in their network including extended family, friends, colleagues, teachers, coaches, etc. to support them as a community judge.

  • Photo and Video Release Form for Competitors and their Families

  • American Speech and Debate Association (ASDA) often takes video and photographic footage of tournaments to use for promotional material, the ASDA website, and other electronic platforms used by ASDA. Once these videos/photos have been taken, they remain the property of ASDA and can therefore be used for the above previously stated purposes, even if the person is no longer participating with the American Speech and Debate Association.

I hereby waive any right to inspect or approve the finished videos/photographs and/or printed or electronic matter that may be used in conjunction with them now or in the future, whether that use is known to me or unknown. I also waive any right to royalties or other compensation arising from or related to the use of the video/photograph.

I grant permission for myself and/or my child(ren) to be photographed and filmed during the ASDA tournament for promotional material and for the continued use by the American Speech and Debate Association.  A parent or guardian signature is required for students under the age of 18 years.
