  • Alma Dorsey Harper Scholarship for Nursing

  • Erline Everett is honoring her mother Alma Dorsey Harper with this scholarship. Alma was a nurse in the 1940s.  She worked in the emergency department at Coney Island Hospital for 30 years. She continued to do private duty nursing at many of the hospitals and nursing homes in New York City. Alma rendered care to the sick and elderly in the neighborhood. Her loving and caring manner is what inspired me to become a nurse. As Director of the Retirees Service she organized luncheons and cruises. Alma received many contributions and outstanding performance awards for her performance in nursing. She was a Girl Scouts and Boy Scout leader and worked the voting polls and encouraged seniors to vote. Alma was an avid traveler attending medical seminars throughout the United States. She then traveled outside the United States all over the world.  She is remembered for her kind, generous nature and lived her life as a giver and nurturer. A word of encouragement from her mother  was “Always do your best to be the best.” Her words and deeds have influenced many and will live on through this scholarship.

    ●      Applicant must be pursuing a degree in nursing.
