Heidelberg Alumni U.S. (HAUS) is pleased to invite applications for the HAUS Scholarship for the academic year 2026-27. The scholarship is available to qualified students from a United States university planning to study at Heidelberg University, Germany.

Universität Heidelberg consistently ranks among the best universities in Germany and the world. For over 600 years, research has grounded scholarship, sparked international cooperation, and fueled innovation at Heidelberg University. 

Heidelberg boasts a world-class education and offers students an affordable and high quality of life in one of Germany’s most beautiful cities. The green hills of the Neckar Valley region boast a rich student life, including cultural events, sports, and year-round recreational activities, all within one hour of Frankfurt International Airport.

The scholarship award is $7,000 for Master’s students or $4,500 for Bachelor’s students for one semester.

We are seeking candidates with a strong academic background who can also fulfill the role of ambassador for HAUS upon their return from their study abroad experience.

HAUS Scholarship Candidates must meet the following requirements:

• Undergraduate or Master’s student with strong academic credentials enrolled at - or graduated from - an institution of higher education in the U.S. 
• United States residency
• Acceptance as a student at Heidelberg University (proof can be submitted at a later time)

Note: Students currently enrolled at Heidelberg University are not eligible for the HAUS Scholarship.

If you are planning to study in Heidelberg as an exchange student as part of a university partnership, you will receive information on the application process at Heidelberg University from your exchange coordinator.

HAUS Expectations for Scholarship Recipients:

1. Successfully complete your academic program at Heidelberg University.
2. Register with Heidelberg Alumni International (HAI) and HAUS upon arrival and cooperate with HAI while in Heidelberg.
3. Participate in Heidelberg HAUS chapter events.
4. Serve as an ambassador for HAUS and Heidelberg University after completing studies in Heidelberg.
5. Provide a report on your time at Heidelberg University, including good-quality photos of yourself on campus or in town.
6. Adhere to all federal and local public health and safety regulations.

• Electronic copy of your most recent transcript
• Your resume or CV
• Proof of U.S. residency (copy of driver’s license, passport, utility bill,etc.)
• An essay of 500-600 words addressing the following:
  • Why are you applying to Heidelberg University?
  • Why are you applying for the HAUS Scholarship?
  • What is your study proposal, and how do you expect it to shape your plans in the future?
  • How would you propose to fulfill your role as HAUS Ambassador once you return to the U.S.?
• A letter of recommendation from a professor (see below for details)

Please note that you will not be able to save and return to the application. Please gather all necessary materials and documents before starting the application.

In addition, you will need to submit a letter of recommendation from one of your professors on letterhead in order for your application to be considered complete. Please ask your recommender to email this letter as an attachment directly to info@heidelberguniversity.org.

If your college or university requires an email address to send the transcripts rather than releasing them directly to you, please send them to info@heidelberguniversity.org.

Please submit the complete application (application form, additional materials, recommendation letter) by May 31, 2026. 

Short-listed candidates may be invited to participate in a virtual interview.
