  • Position Summary

  • The Family Support Specialist provides direct support to parents and caregivers navigating special education and related systems. Responsibilities include conducting client intakes, providing resource navigation, supporting families through the IEP/504 process, attending meetings (virtual or in-person), assisting with school communication, and helping families understand their rights and available services. This role requires strong communication, cultural humility, and the ability to work with families experiencing high levels of stress or systemic barriers.

  • Key Responsibilities

    • Conduct intake assessments with families to identify needs and priorities.
    • Support parents in understanding special education, IEPs, 504 Plans, and related processes.
    • Attend IEP/504 meetings with families as an advocate/support person (virtual or in-person).
    • Provide warm referrals to community, mental health, educational, and social service resources.
    • Assist families with paperwork, letters, requests for evaluation, and follow-up communication with schools.
    • Maintain accurate documentation and case notes in the organization’s CRM system.
    • Participate in team meetings, supervision, and ongoing training opportunities.
    • Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to ethical boundaries at all times.
    • Engage professionally with schools, agencies, and partners representing Futures Unwalled.
    • Support outreach, workshops, events, and other program activities as needed.
  • Preferred Qualifications

    • Lived or family experience with disabilities, special education, or IEP advocacy.
    • Experience in case management, parent coaching, education advocacy, or social work.
    • Experience completing documentation or progress notes.
    • Public speaking or facilitation skills for workshops.
    • Bilingual Spanish-English strongly preferred
