    THE PROMISE PLEDGE: SCHOLARSHIP ACCEPTANCE FORM

    Whether deferring or accepting your award for the upcoming school year, you are indicating that you have read and agree to adhere to the scholarship conditions as set forth in this document. You are also giving us permission to use your information for promotional purposes regarding your Buchanan Promise Scholarship.


    STUDENTS DEFERRING AWARD FOR LATER USE:

    Check the box “I am deferring my scholarship award” when completing The Promise Pledge: Scholarship Acceptance Form.

    By deferring, you are stating you realize it is your responsibility to contact the Buchanan Promise Program Officer when you are ready to continue your post-secondary education.

    *Deferrals need to note the time constraints outlined in “Terms of Scholarship” on the other side of this document.

    STUDENTS ACCEPTING AWARD FOR USE DURING THE 2026-2027 SCHOOL YEAR:

    Check the box “I accept my scholarship for the 2026-2027 academic year & understand this scholarship will be used for tuition, books, fees, and other educational expenses”.

    Complete the Buchanan Promise Scholarship Award Form on the Buchanan Promise Website once you have your student identification number and fall schedule to request funds.

    EXCEPTIONS
    No exceptions to the above requirements will be allowed unless approved by the Buchanan Promise Administration at Michigan Gateway Community Foundation.

    Appeals are initiated by contacting the Buchanan Promise Program Officer. The appeal Application form is available on our website.

    The Promise Pledge: Scholarship Acceptance Form closes on August 15, 2026, at 11:59 pm. 

    ELIGIBILITY

    1. All students who graduate from Buchanan Community Schools (BCS), 2017 and beyond, are residing in the BCS district, and have been BCS students for 4 years or more. (Enrollment and residency MUST be continuous).

    2. Admitted to and enrolled in any accredited postsecondary institution, including a 2 year degree, a 4 year degree, certificate, or vocational/trade program. Once attending a post-secondary institution, students must:

    a. Make regular progress toward a degree or certification as determined by the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards of the institution they are attending.

    b. Must maintain a cumulative 2.0 grade point average (GPA) or better.

    c. If your GPA falls below 2.0 or you are not making SAP, you will be placed on academic probation and will not be eligible for future funding until you bring your GPA back to at least 2.0. 

                                       

    TERMS OF THE SCHOLARSHIP
    The Buchanan Promise provides up to four (4) years of support, at a maximum of $3,750 per school year (depending on your scholarship funding percentage level), to be used for educational expenses toward a degree or certificate/training, including tuition, fees, books, room & board, that is charged through an account maintained at your institution (it is important that you see your tax advisor regarding the taxability of the Buchanan Promise).

    No grants will be disbursed directly to any student. Promise funds expire within six years after the date of high school graduation and are meant to be paid out equally over that period (i.e., will not pay out the full award in any given year). Exceptions to this requirement can be granted for active military service.

    You will be sent a link or can visit our website, where you MUST accept your Promise award by completing The Promise Pledge: Scholarship Acceptance Form. You will be removed from all consideration for a Promise Scholarship if you do not complete The Promise Pledge Form by 08/15/2026 The Promise Pledge will allow you to defer your award if you do not intend to use the Promise right away. If you are using your award this fall, you will need to submit the Buchanan Promise Scholarship Award Form and provide us with verification of enrollment which includes an enrollment letter, class schedule, or tuition statement with your student identification number.

    DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS
    New Scholarship recipients must submit:

    *The Promise Pledge: Scholarship Acceptance Form

    *The Buchanan Promise Scholarship Award Form with verification of enrollment: enrollment letter, class schedule, or tuition statement with your name, your school’s name, and your student identification number.

    *All changes to contact information as they occur. This includes home and school addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. A Contact Information Change sheet can be found on our website.

    DISTRIBUTION OF SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS
    All funds will be paid directly to the qualified educational institution by the drop/add period of each semester as defined by each institution. Our communication with your institution will instruct them to divide the scholarship award between semesters (up to $1,875.00 each semester, depending on your scholarship funding percentage level) unless we are paying per semester. *Payments will be processed once the required documentation identified above is received. It takes approximately two weeks for checks to be processed.

    By submitting, I indicate that I have read and agree to adhere to the scholarship conditions as set forth in The Promise Pledge: Scholarship Acceptance form that I received upon graduation from BCS.
