LOCATION / DIRECTIONS: Scout Camp is located in the Carson River Ranch area of Fort Churchill State Historic Park, Silver Springs, NV. Camp is located approximately 11 miles south of Silver Springs (where you may find fuel, groceries, feed, and auto supplies) via US-95 ALT. Just south of Buckland Station on the banks of the Carson River turn east onto Simpson Rd (the Pony Express Route). Follow the Pony Express Route dirt road 1¼ miles east and turn left through the cattle guard into Scout Camp. Ride Camp is open from Friday thru Sunday. Scout Camp is located adjacent to the Carson River. It is a large, dispersed camping area that includes picnic tables, fire rings with grill tops, and two vault toilets.

Scout Camp is a carry-in, carry-out trash area. Horse manure needs to be picked up and carried out or disposed of in the designated manure dump area. CAMPSITES MUST BE LEFT COMPLETELY CLEAN!!! In the event that the river is high enough to flood Scout Camp, we will move camp up to the road across from Scout Camp.

HISTORY: An integral part of the history of Nevada and the American West, Fort Churchill was built in 1860 to provide protection for early settlers and westbound emigrants and guard the Pony Express and telegraph lines. Today the ruins are preserved in a state of arrested decay within Fort Churchill State Historic Park, and visitors can walk designated trails to observe the ruins. The park also includes the renovated Buckland Station, an important way station in the 1800s for pioneer travelers on the Overland Route.

Nevada’s first, largest and most elaborate military outpost was active from its establishment in July 1860, through an era rife with local and national conflict, and up to its abandonment in the fall of 1869. During this tumultuous yet significant decade in the history of Nevada and the American West, Fort Churchill helped to bring about a semblance of Federal control over a quickly developing and resource-rich area that lacked effective government control. The troops stationed at Fort Churchill protected California-bound emigrants, safeguarded the Pony Express and telegraph lines, fought battles and skirmishes with local Native Americans, protected area settlements, intervened in miner’s disputes and quelled any uprisings brought about by the Civil War.

The Carson River Ranches were acquired for public recreation in 1990, providing the first-ever opportunity to connect state park units. In 1994, the State of Nevada purchased the 3,229 acres of ranch land along the Carson River corridor between the Fort Churchill State Historic Park and the Lahontan State Recreational Area. Included in that purchase was the Bucklands Pony Express Station, which was restored and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

NASTR TRAILS PROJECT: In 1998-1999, NASTR members provided volunteer trail building labor for the project at several work parties. The project included clearing and signage for seven trailheads, a restroom and horse corrals, camp areas and approximately 30 miles of trail connecting the two State Park units, as well as BLM lands. The trails accommodate non-motorized users, equestrians, hikers, 4-H, campers, hunters, mountain bikers and educational activities and canoeing on the Carson River.  NASTR continues to maintain the section of trial along the Carson River annually in preparation for the ride season.

PARK RULES: All vehicles are subject to parking fees, payable by cash or check only. Day Use $5/vehicle/day. Overnight Camping $15/vehicle/day. Quiet hours are in effect from 10pm-7am. Pets must be kept on a leash no longer than 6-ft or contained inside a vehicle; owners are responsible for cleaning up pet waste. Fires are restricted to portable stoves and grill or fire rings provided by the park; cutting, gathering, or removal of wood or plant material is not permitted. Leave no trace; please leave the area as clean or cleaner than you found it.

Riders will pay their own camping fees.  Upon arrival, take an envelope at the kiosk, fill it out, and place your payment inside.  Hang the tag on your dash where it is easily visible and bring the envelope to ride management when you check in.

You will not be allowed to check in without proof of payment for camping fees. DO NOT try to place your camping envelope in the kiosk that is taped shut and bagged.  DO NOT tell the check in person that you did.  You will have to fill out another envelope and pay in order to get your rider packet.  This is not negotiable.

TRAIL DESCRIPTION: All trails will be laid out in a loop configuration, with all vet checks in camp. Riders will enjoy scenic canyon climbs, desert washes, natural springs, stock tanks, dry lake terrain over jeep roads, and winding single track trails along the Carson River under the mighty Cottonwood trees. The majority of the footing is sandy; however, there are some areas of rock and gravel road. The trail is mostly flat with several gradual climbs.

The 50-mile ride is the 1st qualifier for the NASTR Trifecta and/or NASTR Triple Crown.  The 25-mile ride is the 1st qualifier for the NASTR Hat Trick. The Intro Ride is the first qualifier in the Did You Die? Series.

Riders will be sent electronic copies of the map to print off or download.  Trails will be marked with flagging and we will also be using the Rides with GPS app.  Files will be sent to download the Wednesday before the ride.  Cell service is not reliable at this camp site, so we highly recommend downloading everything prior to leaving home.

RIDERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY WHILE CROSSING PAVED ROADS!!!

PRE-RIDE VET CHECK / RIDE MEETING: Our ride control judges will be  Dr. Susan McCartney as Head Control Judge and Dr. Betsy Lau as Treatment vet plus 2 vets from the FEI team.  Vetting will begin upon the arrival of the veterinarians, approximately 4:00 pm Friday. • I wish to participate in the Nevada Derby Ride. I agree to abide by the rules of AERC and those of the aforementioned ride.

I understand that endurance riding involves being in remote areas for extended periods of time, far from communications, transportation, and medical facilities. These areas have many natural and man-made hazards to include wild and domestic animals such as cows, coyotes, wild horses, sheep, goats, snakes, squirels, mice, and birds, which ride management cannot anticipate, identify, modify or eliminate; that horses can be excitable, difficult to control, and unpredictable; and that accidents can happen to anyone at anytime.  I am aware this endurance ride covers difficult terrain, on trails where the footing for horses may be unsure, and will include highway crossing hazards.  I further acknowledge that competitive or "endurance" riding over considerable distances contains inherent risks of injury and damage to me personally, to my equine, and my equipment.  I agree to take full responsibility for myself and the animal I am riding.

Knowing these facts, I, nevertheless, in consideration of your accepting this entry, do hereby for myself, heirs, executors, and administrators, waive and release the above named ride, and all other persons, organizations, and agencies, regardless of their capacity in any way connected with the above named ride, or their representatives, heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns from any and all right, claim or liability for damages, or for any and all injuries that may be sustained by me, including injuries to animals, or from any and all claims of any kind or nature that I might have. I will hold AERC, the Nevada All- State Trail Riders, Inc. all ride personnel and all property owners over whose land the ride passes blameless for any accident, injury, or loss that might occur due to my participation in the ride, and free from all liability for such injury or loss.

Further, I do hereby acknowledge that said release will extend to any accidents, damages, or claims arising out of my entry, caused by my own acts or anyone or any animals within my control.

I do acknowledge that I read the foregoing paragraphs, and know and understand the contents thereof.
