PPAK9 Grant Application
  • PPAK9 EQUIPMENT APPLICATION

  • This application and the information contained herein is proprietary & confidential,
and may not be redistributed without the express written consent from Project Paws Alive, Inc.
  • Background

  • Thank you for requesting an equipment donation from Project Paws Alive (PPAK9). Please read this packet
in its entirety and contact us with any questions prior to submitting your completed paperwork. Please note
the majority of this packet is for your information and records.
  • Organization:

  • Project Paws Alive, Inc. (PPAK9) is a volunteer run 501(c)3 nationwide nonprofit organization. Our mission is
to provide vital protective K9 equipment to underfunded Law Enforcement, Fire/Arson, Search & Rescue
and Military K9 units throughout the United States. PPAK9 's goal is to establish a working relationship with
you and your agency for the long-term so when your equipment needs to be replaced or you add K9s, we
hope you will contact us again.
  • PPAK9 currently focuses on donating the following equipment:
    1. K9 Ballistic Vests - combo ballistic and spike
      1. ACV (Agile Canine Vest) – Standard
      2. K9 Storm - Special Request Only. *Requires Approval
    2. K9 First Aid Field Trauma Kits
    3. K9 NARCAN kits
    4. Animal Oxygen Recovery Mask kits
    5. Vehicle Heat Alarms - "Hot n' Pop systems" with NO K9 LEFT BEHIND & ACE WATCHDOG technology
  • *Other equipment requests will be reviewed and a determination on ability to fundraise for these
items will be made by the PPAK9 Board of Directors on an individual request basis.
  • Equipment Information

  • PPAK9 does not make any equipment. PPAK9 uses only licensed NIJ vendors for all equipment. All
equipment is ordered specifically for each request. PPAK9 does not store or stock-pile equipment. Due to
the nationwide demand for equipment, PPAK9 cannot guarantee full funding for your equipment will be
available at the time of your request. If funding is available you will be notified and your equipment will be
ordered and directly delivered to you. When less than 100% of the total amount of funding required is
available PPAK9 will conduct a fundraising campaign for your equipment.
  • How Our Equipment Fundraiser Campaigns Work

  • PPAK9 is required to follow a standard process for all equipment requests regardless of how large or small
the request may be. This is due to legal and compliance requirements.
  • Notice:

  • PPAK9 does not require any fees or services in exchange for providing our services to an approved equipment requestor/agency. At no time will PPAK9 request any funds, or any other type of "payment" for our volunteer services. PPAK9 reserves all rights to make all final decisions on application acceptance, priority, and delivery.
  • Application Submission

  • All requests for equipment must be made via this equipment request packet. PPAK9 does not accept written email requests, verbal requests, requests made by social media, or requests made by third parties on your behalf. Submission of your application does not mean your application has been accepted. You will receive written confirmation if your application is accepted.
  • Single K9 Request
Please submit one (1) application per K9. If you have more than one K9 we require that you submit a separate application for each K9 to meet our compliance requirements.
  • K9 Unit - Multiple K9 Requests
Please submit one (1) application per K9. If you are part of a K9 Unit submitting more than one application, PPAK9 will not review your application until all applications from your unit are received.
  • Eligibility

  • To be eligible to receive equipment grants agencies must agree to all terms and conditions herein. Equipment grants are given on a first come first served basis and as funds become available. Submission of this application does not guarantee equipment will be awarded. Upon receipt of your equipment request, PPAK9 will review and verify your application in the order in which it was received. You will be notified if your application has been accepted, denied, or requires additional information.
  • Both handler and K9 must be fulltime K9 unit members of an accredited agency in good standing. Do not submit an application if the K9 will be retired in less than 12 months.
  • We are unable to accept equipment requests from private individuals, third parties, volunteers, part-time handlers, part-time/volunteer agencies, businesses, contractors, tribal governments or departments, non-United States agencies, foreign governments, or other non-profits.
  • Acceptance

  • Once your application is accepted we will advise you in writing for your records. Due to the volume of requests PPAK9 receives we may maintain a waitlist. If you are placed on our waitlist we will contact you when your campaign is next to confirm the information in your application is still correct. If you are placed on our waitlist we will not be able to provide a date by when your campaign will start. By nature of a waitlist, the campaigns ahead of you need to complete first. Completion is dependent upon being fully funded.
  • Master Campaign

  • A master campaign page detailing the equipment requested and total amount needed will be placed on our website with a specific donation link for your equipment. PPAK9 will then implement all our communication avenues to solicit tax-deductible donations. Our avenues may include social media, mainstream media, etc. Press releases will also be implemented as needed to request donations. PPAK9 may also solicit your local businesses who may be interested in making a donation.
  • Your master campaign must be fully funded (reach its total fundraiser amount needed) before any equipment will be ordered. This is because PPAK9 has to pay in full at the time the equipment is ordered.
  • You/your K9 unit lead will be provided links to your campaign and all marketing materials for your fundraiser. We ask that you share these links and promote your fundraiser as much as possible via social media or any means you have available. Providing a campaign kick-off press release is required.
  • When your campaign reaches its funding goal you will be notified immediately and all equipment will be ordered. Any campaign overages are allotted to our general fund for the next campaign in our queue.
  • How Long Will It Take to Fund Your Campaign?

  • PPAK9 's goal is always to get the required funding as quickly as possible. We cannot predict how quickly this may happen and we are unable to provide timelines. Many factors play into this such as, but not limited to; geographic location (urban vs. rural), media coverage, and your participation promoting your campaign. We will only run an equipment campaign until we have 100% funding. When the funding is obtained, we will end your equipment campaign.
  • NOTE: The more you and your agency promote your PPAK9 fundraising campaign the quicker full funding will be achieved. Agency promoted campaigns fund 10 times faster than those that are not promoted.
  • Individual, Business, Group, or Organization Equipment Funding & Sponsorship

  • If an individual, business, group, or organization offer to fund specific equipment or a donation amount, PPAK9 will reserve their funds for your equipment. This is called a "restricted donation" meaning is it only to be used for you. If you are approached by anyone wanting to donate funds or sponsor equipment, please direct all inquiries and payments to PPAK9 immediately to avoid delays and ensure correct pricing plus processing fees if they elect to pay by PayPal. Our pricing includes all shipping and customization fees. Our vendors require payment in full at the time of ordering therefore PPAK9 must have all funds clear our bank before we are able to order your equipment.
  • Multiple Nonprofit Organization Fundraising

  • Due to donor confusion and other legal and auditing complications, PPAK9 will not run your campaign if you have any other nonprofit organization fundraising for you at the same time. Failure to advise PPAK9 that another nonprofit is fundraising for you at the same time will disqualify your application and your campaign will be closed. Any campaign funds collected will be automatically forfeited into our general K9 fund.
  • PPAK9 does in some cases agree to work with other agencies, businesses, groups, schools, churches, etc. to co-fundraise. Please note that in these cases PPAK9 contractually remains the primary funding manager and remains the primary point of contact. You will be notified in advance if this applies to your campaign.
  • Equipment Order

  • Equipment orders are shipped direct. Please allow 10-12 weeks for ballistic vest manufacturing.
  • Equipment Presentations

  • These are media events/photo opportunities whereby the sponsor or donors who funded your equipment are given an opportunity to meet the K9s and view the equipment. These presentations often bring in donations for future equipment and/or funds for replacement equipment when needed. Sponsors especially enjoy these presentations as it may be the only time they are able to meet the K9 they helped. Equipment presentations are scheduled within 1-2 weeks from the time the equipment is delivered. Equipment presentations are 10-15 minutes and held on a case by case basis and when logistically feasible.
  • Campaign Closure Tasks

  • Within 1-2 weeks of receiving your equipment you must compete all of the following:
    1. Publish a press release. A sample press release can be sent to you upon request.
    2. Send us at least 5-6 photos/videos of the K9(s) and the equipment.
    a) If you receive a vest we ask that you send photos of the K9 standing and sitting while wearing the vest(s).
    b) Please include 2-3 photos of the Handler with the K9(s) and their equipment.
    c) Pictures in front of your vehicle, agency signage, or as a unit are great ideas.
    3. Leave a 5-star positive review on following site:
    a) https://greatnonprofits.org/org/project-paws-alive/
    i) If for any reason you cannot provide a positive review, please let us know immediately.
ii) Reviews are used by donors and corporations when evaluating if they should donate or sponsor. Reviews provide proof to donors that the equipment is being received by K9 handlers and encourages donations so we can continue to support you in the future.
    4. Conduct an equipment presentation as needed / if feasible.
    5. Share photos of K9 & equipment in the media and on social media if possible.
  • Note: Certain tasks may not apply to DOD or DHS classified units, counterterrorism units, units classified as secret or above, or any units where identity must not be known.
  • Recipient Participation Terms

  • You and your unit/agency/department agree to:
  • 1. Ensure the K9(s) and Handler(s) are certified and actively employed by the agency or department.
  • 2. Provide 5-6 high quality digital photos of each K9 & Handler for use in your campaign
(examples: off duty, on duty, with handler, with family, close up, without the handler, etc.).
  • 3. Provide permission to Project Paws Alive, Inc. in perpetuity to use all media and materials for
fundraising activities via social media, our website, print, and third-party fundraising promotions.
  • 4. Submit a press release to at least one media outlet upon notification of campaign fundraising start
and then again upon campaign completion.

website which is an .ORG (not .com). Site address: www.PPAK9.org
  • 4.2. Provide PPAK9 copies and/or links to the above media items within two days of release.
  • 5. Actively participate in promoting PPAK9 's campaign fundraising efforts for your equipment via social
media, website, blogs, newspapers, local news, and/or other communications.
  • 6. Disclose agency funding:
  • 6.1. If your agency has already begun fundraising efforts prior to contacting PPAK9 please let us
know when you submit your application. PPAK9 needs to be advised in advance so that we can
be prepared for any questions regarding your fundraising and any potential conflicts it may
have on your PPAK9 fundraising campaign.
  • 6.2. If your agency currently has any funds available (including grant awards) to go towards the
purchase of your K9 equipment, you must notify PPAK9 at the time of submitting your
application. PPAK9 will need to know how much funding is available for your equipment so
that we can calculate the appropriate funding total required.
  • 7. Not engage with, or promote, any other nonprofits or groups for K9 fundraising or any other K9
support purposes for the duration of your campaign until your funding total has been achieved.
  • 7.1. If you previously worked with another resource and they collected funds for you/ your K9/unit,
it is your responsibility to get those funds sent to PPAK9 to use for your campaign funding.
  • 7.2. If you are aware or become aware of an individual or other source that is fundraising for you
or established an online fundraiser for you during your active PPAK9 campaign, you are
required to get those funds sent to PPAK9 to use for your campaign funding.
  • 7.3. PPAK9 will not solicit or request funds collected for you/your K9 by a third party.
  • 8. Complete all Campaign Closure Tasks listed herein upon receipt of the equipment.
  • 9. Funds received exceeding the amount of your campaign go into our general equipment fund.
  • 10. Receive veterinary medical training prior to using any donated medical related items received from
    this campaign.
  • 11. Provide confirmation to PPAK9 that all equipment has been received and was not damaged during
shipping within two days of receipt.
  • PPAK9 Equipment Requests

  • Spreading the word:

  • You and your agency's help spreading the word about your PPAK9 fundraising campaign will significantly increase donations and fund your campaign quickly. The success of these campaigns are determined by three items: (1) how viral it becomes on social media, (2) media and press coverage, and (3) how many people know about it and then continue to share it with others encouraging donations.
  • The more people know about it, the more they will share it and that will increase donations. We want to encourage as many donations as possible so that we can fund your equipment as quickly as possible. If you have contacts with any media outlets we encourage you to share your fundraiser campaign with them or direct them to us for details and/or comments. Help us help you!
  • In exchange for PPAK9's agreement to raise funds for your equipment request you agree to help us promote our fundraising project for your equipment. We rely 100% on donations and sponsorships to fund the donation of equipment. Our donors and sponsors want to see who they are supporting. Donations are 86% higher when donors can see the first responders and K9s they are supporting. Some of our Sponsors will donate money based on how much publicity we can provide them and/or how many social media followers we have that will see they are a sponsor. We have had several sponsors pay for all requested equipment simply because the requesting K9 looked like their former family pet. Promotion is key.
  • Simple actions you can do such as a website posting, press release, or mentioning the campaign fundraiser via social media or news can often yield huge results and enable us to fund your equipment up to five times faster. Donations increase significantly when the receiving unit participates in spreading the word. And don't be shy about constantly reminding people. The more your campaign is promoted the quicker it will get funded.
  • We understand for security reasons some handlers, K9s, or units may not be able to provide photos or names to the public. We understand some units are restricted from all media, including social media use. We respect all agency security protocols and will handle those on a case-by-case basis.
  • Selecting Your Equipment

  • The following pages contain the full details on all the equipment items currently offered by PPAK9. PPAK9 will only provide the equipment you select via this packet. If you require additional equipment information please see our equipment list web page at www.PPAK9.org/equipment for more detailed information or contact us directly prior to submitting your application.
  • PPAK9 does not encourage equipment requests that cannot be immediately used or may not needed. However, it is far better for you to select all items you need now so that PPAK9 can have a total sum of funds needed and fundraise accordingly. It is much easier for PPAK9 to raise funds to address one larger and more comprehensive equipment request rather than to go back and ask for more money later. Once funding is completed you will notice that it's incredibly difficult to ask for more. This is because once donors are told the campaign is complete they will generally not provide additional funding.
  • K9 Ballistic Vests:

  • If you have a K9 ballistic vest meeting any of the conditions below, please request a new vest for your K9. The new K9 vests are lighter and protect against higher grades of ballistics and spikes.
  • a) Vest is older than 3 years old (production date is printed on vest label)
    b) Vest was handed down from another K9 (not custom fit)
    c) Vest is either bullet or stab protective, but NOT both.
    d) Vest has rips, tears, separation of the exterior fibers/material, or punctures to the Kevlar material (thus expediting deterioration)
  • Regardless of the manufacturer or amount of use, Kevlar vests start breaking down the day you take it out of its original packaging. Temperature, dust, dirt, water, sweat, and other elements break down Kevlar over time even if it's not being used. This is why manufacturers place a production date on the label and state that the vest should be replaced every 4-5 years. Considering vests can take several months to manufacture its best to reorder when you are close to the replacement window so your K9 doesn't have a gap in coverage. Your vest label and production date can be located on the interior of the vest.
  • First Aid Kits & NARCAN kits:

  • You may request our First Aid Trauma kit and/or our NARCAN kit even if you have another one. We realize our military grade kits are extremely expensive and are top professional grade. This is because we do not make homemade kits and we only purchase direct from NIJ approved manufacturers which means the equipment we donate exceeds all NIJ requirements and will be manufactured only when the order is placed to ensure you have the most current items that will last and not expire shortly after you receive it.

  • K9 NARCAN Kit - 2 Dose

  • The K9 NARCAN kit we offer is not a standard one dose application. Working with K9 handlers and veterinarians who care for working K9 units, our complete K9 NARCAN kit includes two separate nasal spray doses and a NARCAN carry pouch which can be worn on the K9 Handlers duty belt or vest to ensure constant and immediate access when needed. Two doses are included because field reports have shown that often times more than one dose is required to be administered on-scene.
  • narcan image 1
  • The nasal spray NARCAN version is included because it allows quicker deployment than the cheaper syringe version which requires multiple pieces of equipment to be assembled together prior to use. The syringe version requires a MAD Nasal Intranasal Mucosal Atomization Device to be attached to the syringe just prior to use which can mean losing valuable time and potentially losing a part which would render the syringe useless. Rather, the NARCAN nasal spray in our kit allows immediate deployment right out of the package with no additional equipment required.
  • The specialized carry pouches are designed for multi-use by the handlers to offer maximum options for carrying. The exterior is made of rugged nylon that sheds moisture. The interior is poly insulation which provides protection from extreme temperatures. The pouch protects the NARCAN from the weather and elements to ensure the NARCAN is at full strength. The K9 NARCAN kit can be used on both the K9 and their human handler if needed.
  • narcan image 2
  • NOTE: Using NARCAN is not a final treatment. If used, get your K9 to a Vet immediately.

At end of shift, when the handler turns OFF the ignition, there is an audible and visual warning reminding them to remove the K9......" Open door and remove K9! " Only when they open the rear door where the K9 is located and remove the K9, will the system shut down. If the handler does not remove the K9, the system will continue to sound inside the vehicle and give a short honk of the vehicle's horn a couple of times to remind the handler to remove the K9. If the K9 is still not removed, the system will stay ON and keep monitoring the interior environment for the K9.
