Spring 2026 Illustrator Workshops

Calling all young artists ages 10-13! Join us this spring for a series of hands-on art workshops led by a quartet of talented, published illustrators:

Steph Lau, author-illustrator of The Abominable Snow Dancer
Julie Downing, author-illustrator of Night in the City, Hello Sun, and more
Bo Lu, author-illustrator of Bao’s Doll and Ren’s Pencil
Jen de Oliveira, author-illustrator of the Reggie: Kid Penguin series

Each workshop lasts 90 minutes and costs $50. Materials (paper, pens, etc) will be provided and, at the end of each workshop, students will receive a signed copy of one of the featured illustrator’s books. Space for each workshop is limited.

February 15: Steph Lau, Character Design: Shapes & SilhouettesUsing examples from pop culture and her own traditionally published books, author-illustrator Steph Lau will teach basic character design principles, and then guide students through designing characters of their own. All students will receive a signed copy of Steph's picture book, The Abominable Snow Dancer.

March 8: Julie Downing, Expanding Words With Your ArtIn this hands-on workshop, participants will explore how art can extend and enrich written words. Through fun, creative exercises, you’ll use art to respond to text and uncover new layers of meaning. This workshop invites young writers and artists to play, experiment, and discover how art can speak when words alone are not enough. All students will receive a signed copy of Julie's picture book, Night in the City.

April 12: Bo Lu, Magical World of BelongingInspired by drawing from your homes and memories, you'll learn how to create a magical world of belonging with the group. This workshop is about using your art to find your place. All students will receive a signed copy of Bo's picture book, Ren's Pencil.

May 10: Jen de Oliveira, Making Mini Comics Product Image

May 10: Jen de Oliveira, Making Mini ComicsFocusing on comics fundamentals and drawing expressive characters, this workshop will teach artists how to make their own mini comic book. Artists can have their mini comics photocopied and distributed at the store. All students will receive a signed copy of Jen's graphic novel, Reggie: Kid Penguin.
