Think about a social movement that you’re interested in, that is recent and/or that has happened where you live. It can be something at a national level or a small struggle of organised people fighting for change. It can be something you participated in or something you observed from the outside.
Briefly describe the social movement you’ve chosen, and then reflect on the questions in EITHER option 1 or option 2.
OPTION 1: Perspective and Intersectionality
- Which tactics has this movement used, and why might they have chosen those particular approaches?
- How does this struggle intersect with other social issues (class, gender, environment, etc.)?
- Whose voices are centered in public discussions of this issue, and whose are marginalized or absent?
- How would someone directly affected by this struggle describe it differently than media coverage does?
- What assumptions are you making based on your own position relative to this struggle?
OPTION 2: Movement Media
- Did the movement produce its own media? If so, what, and how did this media impact the movement, if at all?
- What kinds of media covered the movement? What role did journalism play in the success or failure of the movement? Can you cite examples of journalists either helping or harming the movement through their coverage?
- Did social media play a role in this struggle and if so, how? Did social media impact the movement negatively or positively, or not at all?
- Did you observe anyone using media in service of the movement in innovative ways that might be repeated or shared with other movements?

- ¿Qué tipos de medios cubrieron el movimiento? ¿Qué papel jugó el periodismo en el éxito o fracaso de la lucha? ¿Puedes citar ejemplos de periodistas que hayan ayudado o perjudicado al movimiento con su cobertura?
- ¿Las redes sociales jugaron algún papel en esta lucha? Si fue así, ¿de qué manera? ¿Tuvieron un impacto positivo, negativo o ninguno?
- ¿Observaste a alguien usar los medios al servicio del movimiento de formas innovadoras que podrían replicarse o compartirse con otros movimientos?
