  • The  New Jersey Council for the Humanities (NJCH) NJCH and Journalism + Design at the New School are partnering with Atlantic Cape to create and deliver free noncredit community reporting workshop series and a community journalism program to equip participants with tools to understand better and articulate what is happening in their communities. Our programs are designed to help you become an active contributor to local news in Atlantic and Cape May Counties. Through this free training participants will learn to produce compelling content based on the issues that shape their communities.

  • Community Reporting Workshop Series: Join our workshop to get the foundational information you need to become a Community Reporter. Engage with your community by understanding the elements of event and activity reporting. This workshop will introduce you to the skills needed to tell local stories. Apply the skills you learned to produce articles for publication in your local paper, community newsletters, or on social media. This four-week workshop will cover topics like understanding the basics, credibility and ethics, interviewing and note-taking, and video recording tips. Participants who attend all three sessions are eligible to attend an in-person session to record their “news piece.” You will receive a tripod and Bluetooth microphone set for successful completion.

  • Community Journalism Course: This is a 12-week online course on the fundamentals of community journalism. The course will cover: What's news to you? How to think like a journalist, find credible information, see the big picture, an introduction to interviewing, practicing deep listening, designing a civic news product, and portfolio development. Your instructor will guide you through the content during the first four weeks, preparing you for the final four weeks, “The Community Newsroom.” During the newsroom segment, you will work with your classmates and instructor to develop and complete three “news products” that are ready for publication. Participants who finish the program by producing three “news products” will receive a digital badge, a micro recorder with case, a reporter’s bag, and reporter’s notebooks. Beginning March 23 to June 8, (weekly ZOOM sessions are required for the final four weeks.)
