OVERVIEW
Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is seeking to fill a full-time Research Technician or Research Associate position, with the specific title determined by the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate. We are seeking a Nutrient Analyst who will play a central role in laboratory-based nutrient and carbon/nitrogen analyses. Primary responsibilities will include the analysis of nutrient and DOC/TDN samples, as well as oversight of analytical workflows to fulfill external contracts. Additional responsibilities include sample collection, initial sample processing (filtration and preservation), data quality control, and support of field- and laboratory-based research activities. The successful candidate will contribute high-quality analytical data that support ongoing research programs, service-based analyses, as well as contribute to report and manuscript preparation as needed. The salary range for this role is $23-$31/ hourly and Bigelow Laboratory has a very generous benefits package.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Sample Processing and Analysis
- Perform sample filtration, preservation, and processing following established protocols
- Conduct wet chemical analyses, including nutrients, chlorophyll a, DOC/TDN, microscopy, and other routine analyses as needed
- Fulfill analytical contracts including receiving, organizing and analyzing samples
- Maintain accurate laboratory notebooks, metadata and data records
Laboratory Operations, Safety, and Supplies
- Maintain instruments and lab materials in proper working order
- Maintain general laboratory safety, organization, and cleanliness
- Monitor laboratory supplies and consumables
- Ensure proper labeling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and samples
Data Management, QA/QC, and Analysis
- Perform data quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC)
- Organize, manage, and archive datasets
- Generate basic data plots and summary statistics using Excel and R when requested
Research Support and Reporting
- Collaborate with team members to compile data summaries and contribute to reports or manuscripts as needed
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not have formal supervisory responsibilities. However, the successful candidate will collaborate with team members and may be asked to assist students in field and lab-based research.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
(education, knowledge, skills, abilities, experience)
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, marine science, or a related field
- Demonstrated experience analyzing nutrient samples using wet chemical techniques
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to follow standard operating procedures and laboratory safety protocols
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-based research environment
- Willingness to travel for field sampling and to work a flexible schedule as required
- Experience with nutrient, chlorophyll a, DOC/TDN, microscopy, or other aquatic/environmental analyses
- Basic experience with data QA/QC, plotting, and summary statistics
- Prior experience working in an academic or research laboratory setting
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Field Sampling and Travel
- Prepare for field sampling efforts conducted by the candidate or other team members
- Participate in field sampling efforts as required
- Travel to field sites
- Assist with preparation, deployment, and maintenance of field equipment
Sample Processing and Analysis
- Flexible schedules may be required to optimize analytical efforts
