Key Conditions of Entry

Eligibility
Entrants must be citizens or residents of Australia, New Zealand, or Oceania’s Pacific Islands and be affiliated with a research organisation responsible for the work shown.
Image requirements
Entries must be original photographs taken by the entrant on or after 1 January 2025. Images must be 100% photographic in origin and must not include generative AI, illustration, or unauthorised compositing.
Scientific context
Each entry must include a clear explanation (up to 500 words) describing the scientific context of the image, including what is taking place and why the work is being carried out.
Ethics and compliance
All images must depict work conducted under appropriate ethical approval (e.g. Animal Ethics Committee or equivalent) and must comply with relevant laws, institutional policies, and animal welfare standards.
Image integrity
Editing is permitted only within standard photographic practices (e.g. cropping, exposure, colour, sharpening). Images must not be manipulated in a way that alters the reality of the scene.
Copyright and permissions
The entrant must be the creator and copyright holder of the image and must have permission from their organisation to submit and share the image.
Use of images
Shortlisted images will be used by Understanding Animal Research Oceania and partners for promotion of the awards and may be shared under a Creative Commons Attribution–NoDerivatives (CC BY-ND 4.0) licence following exhibition.
Final decision
All entries are subject to review and may be disqualified if they do not meet the competition’s Terms and Conditions. Judges’ decisions are final.
