The Du Bois Data Lab is a collaboration between the Center for Journalism & Democracy and the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, with generous support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
If you’re an HBCU journalism student who’s interested in learning how to use data, design and code to help tell stories, this one-week intensive workshop is for you. You don’t need to have any previous experience with data or be a math wiz. It will run from May 26 to June 4, 2026 at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
The Du Bois Data Lab is a free program. We will cover your travel to and from D.C., housing in a dorm throughout the program, provide breakfast and lunch every weekday and a $400 stipend for other meals.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Friday, Feb. 20, 2026
You are eligible to apply for the Du Bois Data Lab if:
1. You are an enrolled undergraduate student at a historically Black college or university.
