CASBO's Policy Platform
Description
The Legislative Committee plays a central role in shaping CASBO’s advocacy work. Members review and make recommendations on legislation and state budget proposals that impact school business and operations. Committee members represent the interests and perspectives of their regional colleagues at both the local and state levels.
Applicants must have 3–5 years of school business experience. Prior advocacy experience is strongly encouraged.
Expectations
Term: Three-year term
Attendance
Active participation is required. Members must attend the following events and review materials in advance. Missing more than two meetings will result in removal from the committee.
Required Meetings
- Legislative Committee Meetings: In-person, full-day meetings held in Sacramento in May, October, January, and February.
- Advocacy Days: Two-day advocacy event in Sacramento held each March.
- Section Fall Education Event: Work with VP of Education at the section level on an Advocacy Update presentation.
- Executive Leadership Forum: In-person, two-day event (attendance strongly encouraged).
- Virtual Meetings: Scheduled as needed.
Responsiveness
Committee members are expected to respond promptly to:
- Requests for input on proposals and data collection.
- CASBO Calls to Action and related advocacy efforts.
- Section member outreach and engagement opportunities.
Members may be asked to:
- Provide testimony at the State Capitol.
- Participate in stakeholder meetings on behalf of CASBO.
Additional Responsibilities
Committee members may also be asked to:
- Connect CASBO’s advocacy team with individuals in their professional network who hold specific subject-matter expertise.
- Support efforts to strengthen engagement within their regional section.
