  • Position Overview
    Community Art Class Instructors at Tacoma Art Museum (TAM) are contract-based teaching artists who design and lead engaging, inclusive, and accessible art classes for community audiences. Instructors create welcoming learning environments that encourage creativity, skill-building, and self-expression while centering community voices, lived experiences, and diverse artistic traditions.

    Application Process
    This is an open, rolling application. Proposed courses are reviewed based on community interest, feasibility, and artistic medium.

    • What Instructors Do 
      • Facilitate art classes aligned with course goals
      • Design engaging activities and collaborate with TAM to procure supplies 
      • Provide clear instructions, demonstrations, and supportive feedback
      • Foster an inclusive and respectful learning environment
      • Set up and clean up the instructional space before and after class
      • Take attendance and submit required documentation
      • Coordinate with TAM staff to ensure smooth program delivery
    • Materials & Support 
      • TAM provides basic art supplies unless otherwise agreed upon
      • Instructors are responsible for the appropriate and safe use of materials
    • Schedule & Time Commitment 
      • Classes are typically scheduled on Thursdays, with sessions commonly offered 11:00 AM–1:00 PM and 5:00–7:00 PM, though schedules may vary.
      • A typical teaching shift is approximately 4 hours, including arrival, setup, instruction, and cleanup
      • Compensation includes instruction, setup, and cleanup
      • Instructors must arrive at least 1 hour before class start time
      • Classes must begin on time and conclude with full cleanup
      • Some programs may occur evenings or weekends

       

    • Qualifications 
    • Required:

      • Experience teaching or facilitating art classes or community programs
      • Strong knowledge of at least one artistic medium
      • Commitment to inclusive, community-centered practice

      Preferred:

      • Experience in museums, schools, or community settings
      • Bilingual or multilingual skills
      • Experience adapting curriculum for accessibility
