  • Subject: Letter of Support for the proposed Granite SUP – 25-002

    Dear Honorable County Commissioners,

I am writing this letter in favor of Granite SUP-25-002, Merrills Pit.

The presence of local gravel pits is vital for our community. By maintaining local operations, we provide essential employment opportunities that allow residents to work within Gem County and return home to their families each night. This stability is a cornerstone of a thriving local economy.

Furthermore, having nearby sources for aggregates is critical for both county and city infrastructure projects. Local sourcing minimizes trucking distances, which directly reduces project costs and ensures that taxpayer dollars are utilized as efficiently as possible. Additionally, hauling materials from nearby sources is environmentally responsible; it creates a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to transporting heavy materials from distant locations.

The proposed operation will contribute meaningfully to the local tax base, providing revenue that can support our schools and other public institutions.

Granite Excavation has proven to be an excellent neighbor and a responsible operator. Owned and operated by native Idahoans who care deeply about our state, they have outlined a comprehensive plan for managing dust and noise. Their commitment to going above and beyond Gem County Code standards demonstrates their dedication to public safety and community well-being.

I urge the Gem County Board of Commissioners to approve this application. This project represents a necessary balance between economic development and the practical needs of our community.

Thank you for your time and consideration of my comments.

    Sincerely,
