Immersive and interactive technologies have transformed mediated communication and decision-making with their ability for audiences to experience vivid perspective-taking. Such perspective-taking has led to technologies such as virtual reality (VR) being widely proclaimed as “empathy machines.” In addition to empathy, immersive experiences also foster sensemaking, shared experiences, and accelerated futures. This talk discusses how the science of immersive storytelling is especially effective in drawing attention and awareness to the plight of often-overlooked stakeholders, with implications in such areas as climate science, health and well-being, and social equality.
