  • Request for References

We ask for two references who are not family or your spiritual director. We will send the references an email asking how long they have known you; whether they have witnessed your calling and abilities for spiritual direction; examples of your spiritual maturity; what you would bring to the ministry of spiritual direction; your areas for growth; and whether they would hesitate to refer someone to you for spiritual direction.

  • Request for Acknowledgement of Spiritual Direction

We will send your spiritual director an email asking him/her to acknowledge that you are in spiritual direction. We will also ask how long and how often you receive spiritual direction, why you would be a good candidate for the ministry of spiritual direction and if there are any concerns about you entering this ministry.. Please provide your spiritual director's email address.
  • Please submit an essay covering the following points:

The essay should be no more than two single-spaced typed pages or three double-spaced typed pages.
  • Talk about the discernment process you engaged in that led you to apply to this program.

Identify a significant life experience that has shaped you to be the person you are today. Please include a period when you found yourself wrestling with some dimension of faith. What, if any, psychological counseling have you had that deepened your understanding of what it means to be human?

Talk about your prayer practices today. How is spiritual direction helpful to you?

How has your experience of Ignatian spirituality affected you?

What are your abilities, desires, and areas of growth that you would bring to the ministry of spiritual direction? What do you hope for and need from this program?

Give one example when you have been approached by another who wanted to talk with you about his/her prayer life.

If you are in recovery, talk about how you practice your program and how long you have been sober and clean.
