Overview

The Sharon White & JD Scholarship is designed to support an African American student who stutters and will graduate from a Washington, DC High School. This scholarship aims to invest in students who are poised to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.

Eligibility Requirements

Must be a current high school senior
Must reside in Washington, DC
Must have a minimum GPA of 2.50
Must have been diagnosed with childhood onset stuttering by a speech therapist or physician
Must be African American
Must plan to enroll in a postsecondary institution (college, university, or accredited trade program)
Demonstrated leadership, service, or community involvement
Finalists must participate in an interview hosted by the selection committee

Scholarship Award

One-time $5,000 scholarship award ($2,500 will be disbursed in the Fall 2026 semester and $2,500 will be disbursed in the Spring 2027 semester).
Funds will be paid directly to the institution and may be used for tuition, housing, meals, or textbooks.

Essay (Required – Maximum 1,000 Words) Prompt: Many students face challenges with communication, including speech differences such as stuttering, that can impact confidence, self-expression, and opportunities. Describe your experience and how it has shaped your personal growth, resilience, or leadership. How have you worked to overcome or manage this challenge, and how has it influenced your goals for the future? In what ways will this scholarship support your continued growth, and how do you plan to use your voice, literally or figuratively, to make a positive impact in your community?(Essays must be original and no longer than 1,000 words.)

Recommendation Letter- Please submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, mentor, or community leader who can speak to your character and potential. This letter should be on letterhead if possible.

Unofficial Transcript- Please submit an unofficial transcript from your current high school. This allows the review committee to verify your cumulative GPA and home address.
