Expression of Interest for Loombah Weir Project
The Loombah Weir project is being undertaken to establish a Macquarie Perch refuge population in the Loombah Weir. Loombah Weir is a closed water and along with McCall Sey Weir provides the water supply for Benalla township. Brown trout will be removed from the reservoir and adjoining Ryans Creek and translocated, where possible, to similar environments such as Lake William Hovell and Mt Beauty Pondage. Volunteers will be required from May 2nd to June 28th to constantly monitor the fish trap and translocation process. This is a 24/7 requirement with camping available onsite and toilet facilities provided. The small campground is camper trailer/caravan accessible. A full induction program will be conducted on Saturday May 2nd from 10.00am until 4.00pm with associated working bee. All volunteers wishing to particpate over the two-month period must be in attendance on this day to receive important information re the responsibilites of risk management, monitoring and collection of fish. Volunteers will be expected to sign a code of conduct as part of their particpation. A boat licence must be held by at least one team member. Teams can consist of a minimum of two and a maximum of four people at any one time. Fishing from personal craft (kayak, canoe only) in Loombah and McCall Sey Weirs, which are closed waters, will be permitted for volunteers in residence with some provisos. There is limited bank access. Registration will be on a first come first serve basis until the calendar is full. All registrants must be a member of the Australian Trout Foundation. Dates for Project in 2026
The Project will run from May 2nd to June 28th. Please advise in the boxes below date in and date out for monitoring the fish trap. Minimum stay is two nights. A minimum of two people and maximum of four per team is required for stay at any one time. First come first serve for date confirmation and participation. Please indicate priority dates below. A second stay would only be offered if all dates are not filled by intial registrations. Registrations close on March 31st to give organisers time to allocate dates.
