What is the Student Aid Index (SAI)?
The Student Aid Index (SAI) is a number calculated from your FAFSA that schools use to determine how much financial aid you’re eligible for. It replaced the old Expected Family Contribution (EFC) starting with the 2024–2025 FAFSA.
A lower SAI generally means more financial aid eligibility.
It can even be negative (as low as –1500), which indicates very high financial need.
Where do I find my SAI?
Your SAI appears on your FAFSA Submission Summary (formerly called the Student Aid Report).
You can find it by:
Logging in at studentaid.gov
Going to “My FAFSA”
Opening your FAFSA Submission Summary once your FAFSA has been processed
It does not appear on the confirmation page — only on the processed summary.
What documents do I need to submit from my FAFSA?
If your FAFSA has been processed:
FAFSA Submission Summary (FSS) This is the official document that includes:
Your SAI
Your FAFSA answers
Your eligibility for Pell Grants and loans
If your FAFSA has NOT been processed yet:
FAFSA Confirmation Page This shows you successfully submitted the FAFSA, even though the SAI isn’t available yet.
Schools use the confirmation page as a temporary placeholder.
Do I need to submit the FAFSA Submission Summary or just the confirmation page?
Processed FAFSA Submission Summary (required because it includes your SAI)
Not processed yet Confirmation Page (temporary until the summary becomes available)
What if my FAFSA hasn’t been processed yet?
Submit your confirmation page to the school
They will update your file later once your FAFSA processes
You do not need to resubmit the FAFSA
You will eventually need to upload or provide the FAFSA Submission Summary once it becomes available
