Idle Hands Incubation Award
IHIA Spring 2026: "Tactility" Time-Based Media
Idle Hands
Founded in 2025, Idle Hands supports artists working across, between, and against disciplinary boundaries. Idle Hands prioritizes practices grounded in experimentation and critical reflection, with particular attention to work that embraces risk, failure, chance, and generative conflict as essential components of artistic exploration. Idle Hands envisions an arts ecosystem in which artistic practice is recognized as a foundational cultural force rather than a discretionary pursuit. The organization advocates for sustained investment in experimental, non-linear, and anti-disciplinary practices as vital to a resilient and reflective society.
Open Call for NYC Artists
Idle Hands invites emerging and mid-career artists based in New York City to apply for the Idle Hands Incubation Award, offering a $10,000 unrestricted* stipend, professional mentorship, and a culminating exhibition in our Williamsburg, Brooklyn loft space. Through the provision of time, space, and financial resources, the Idle Hands Incubation Award enables process-driven artistic inquiry that challenges conventional assumptions about the use and meaning of spaces, objects, and activity.
Theme: Tactility
For this award cycle, Tactility is approached through the lens of time-based media, including film, video, sound, and other durational practices. Within this context, tactility refers to how sensory experience, embodiment, and material presence are conveyed, simulated, or questioned over time. Projects need not involve literal touch or physical materials. Conceptual, abstract, or digitally mediated works are welcome, provided that questions of embodiment, sensory encounter, or material presence unfold through time.
Applicant Criteria
Idle Hands will accept applications exclusively from artists based in the New York City metropolitan area. You must live in one of the five boroughs. Please note: Artist collectives, including duos and trios, are eligible to apply; however, the award stipend remains a single, shared amount regardless of the number of participants.
