OPHELIA REX – SYNOPSIS
Ophelia Rex is a contemporary reimagining of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, set in a working‑class Bronx, New York neighborhood.
The play explores fate, identity, desire, and moral blindness through the fractured relationships of a small group of people whose lives collide with tragic inevitability.
The story centers on Tommy Reardon, a volatile young man drifting through life with simmering rage and an inability to define purpose.
After a violent night at a bar, Tommy returns drunk to the apartment of Billy Ziera, an older neighborhood figure who has long acted as a surrogate father. Their relationship is rooted in loyalty, shared history, and violence, and culminates in a solemn oath in which Billy promises never to betray Tommy. Beneath the bravado, Tommy confesses his growing numbness, fear of stagnation, and emotional disconnection, while Billy masks his own anxieties about aging, isolation, and a looming checkered past.
Meanwhile, Ophelia Reardon, Tommy’s mother, is introduced as a strong yet emotionally complex woman who has lived much of her life in sacrifice and restraint.
She is secretly, romantically involved with Billy, who in this passage she is confronting Billy over his romantic idealism. Trying to remind him, thats not how life works.
