  • Program Overview

  • The Camp Crew teen volunteer program is a summer-only opportunity that runs from June 15 to August 14.

    Camp Crew supports the North Carolina Zoo’s summer camps by helping to lead age-appropriate activities, assist with crafts, games, and themed activities, and set up, organize, and clean up materials. 

    Before you begin, make sure you and your parent/guardian have read and understand what’s involved in being a Camp Crew volunteer.

    The Camp Crew program is only open to students who will be residing this summer within 90 miles of the North Carolina Zoo. At this time, we’re unable to move forward with your interest form for this season.

  • Eligibility

  • Students who are currently in 5th–12th grade (at the time they apply for this position) will volunteer on their own in the Camp Crew program, without a parent or legal guardian.

  • Program Requirements

  • The North Carolina Zoo is not accessible by public transportation. Volunteers are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the Zoo for each scheduled shift. This may include being driven by a parent/guardian, carpooling, or other reliable arrangements.

    The Camp Crew program requires volunteers to have reliable transportation to and from the Zoo for each scheduled shift. At this time, we’re unable to move forward with your interest form for this season.

  • In-Person Training

  • Attendance is required to participate in the program. Details will be emailed after the completion of the orientation materials.

  • Thank you for your interest!

    Attendance at the in-person training on June 11 is required for all Camp Crew. At this time, we’re unable to move forward with your interest form for this season.

  • Zoo Pathways Series

  • The Zoo Pathways Series is made up of fun, interactive learning events for teens from all Zoo volunteer programs. These sessions offer a great way to explore different career pathways, hear from Zoo professionals, and build skills for personal and professional growth.

  • Thank you for your interest!

    Attendance at at least two of the in-person Zoo Pathways events on July 9, July 23, August 4, and August 13 is required for all Camp Crew. At this time, we’re unable to move forward with your interest form for this season.

  • Program Requirements

  • All Camp Shifts: 8:45 a.m. - 4:15 p.m.

    Camp Crew volunteers must commit to a minimum of 6 camp days over the summer.

    • One full week (Monday-Friday) of a weeklong camp is required
    • The remaining additional day can be completed by volunteering at a single day camp, a two day camp, or another weeklong camp. 

    Volunteers are welcome to volunteer for additional camp days outside of the program requirement if they would like.

  • 5th & 6th Graders

    Available dates for volunteers who are currently in the 5th and 6th grades.
  • Please take a moment to think about any summer commitments you already have planned (for example: sports camps, family vacations, classes, or other activities).

    To help us understand your schedule, review the camp dates carefully and indicate which dates you are NOT available to volunteer this summer. This does not guarantee that you will be scheduled on or off specific dates.

    If you are accepted into the Camp Crew program, you will receive an acceptance email with the specific dates you are scheduled to volunteer based on the needs of the camp and your availablity.

  • 7th & 8th Graders

    Available dates for volunteers who are currently in the 7th and 8th grades.
  • Please take a moment to think about any summer commitments you already have planned (for example: sports camps, family vacations, classes, or other activities).

    To help us understand your schedule, review the camp dates carefully and indicate which dates you are NOT available to volunteer this summer. This does not guarantee that you will be scheduled on or off specific dates.

  • Camp Crew volunteers will be selected for interviews based on their responses in the Tell Us About You section above.

    Everyone who completes this interest form will receive an email on April 30 letting them know whether they have been selected to move forward to a virtual interview.

    If selected for an interview, you will receive additional details about what to expect and the next steps in the volunteer process.
