  • Section 3: Board Superpowers

During our board recruitment discussions, Flathead Rivers Alliance has identified several “archetypes” (or board member superpowers) that help guide our program offerings, community engagement, and financial sustainability. As with any small nonprofit, all board members collaborate across these realms. However, we also encourage board members to take a leading role in the area that best matches their experience, personality, and community connections. Below are four realms we have identified as areas for growth. Please review the descriptions and respond to the short answer prompt at the end of this section.
  • The Educator

The Educator is outgoing, patient, and a strong communicator. They excel at presenting clear, accessible information to diverse audiences and help shape FRA’s educational messaging and community programming. This archetype supports: Community events and educational campaigns, Development of outreach materials (print, signage, digital), Volunteer recruitment, especially among families and young people. Educators often collaborate with partner organizations such as Montana Kayak Academy, Wild Montana, Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation, Flathead National Forest, Glacier National Park, and Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks to name a few, and represent FRA in community settings across the Flathead Valley.
  • The Campaigner

The Campaigner brings experience in nonprofit administration, fundraising, and project or program management. They are comfortable with the behind-the-scenes work that keeps an organization running and growing. This archetype supports: Fundraising campaigns and donor development, Grant writing and reporting, Program planning and implementation. Identify new fundraising campaign opportunities. Experience with the Whitefish Community Foundation’s Great Fish Community Challenge is a plus, as this is FRA’s primary annual fundraising campaign.
  • The Tycoon

The Tycoon is deeply connected to the Flathead Valley business community and understands how to translate those relationships into meaningful partnerships. This archetype supports: Corporate sponsorships and business partnerships, In-kind donations and event sponsorships. Long-term funding relationships with local and regional businesses FRA’s current partners range from banks and credit unions to guides, outfitters, hardware stores, and restaurants throughout Flathead County. We are always seeking to deepen these ties and build new relationships with businesses that value our Wild and Scenic rivers.
  • The Connector

The Connector has strong ties to individual donors and enjoys building relationships. They are comfortable serving as an ambassador for FRA and motivating others to support the organization with their time, resources, and networks. This archetype supports: Donor cultivation and stewardship, Community engagement at events, Donor mixers and appreciation gatherings. During the 2025 Great Fish Community Challenge, FRA more than doubled its number of individual donors compared to 2024.
