  • Program Overview

  • The Play Pals teen volunteer program is a summer-only opportunity that runs from June 17 to July 31.

    Junior Wildlife Assistants is a teen volunteer program that provides hands-on experience in caring for sick, injured, and/or orphaned native wildlife with the goal of returning them to the wild in optimal condition, offering exposure to real-world projects and professional mentorship.

    Before you begin, make sure you and your parent/guardian have read and understand what’s involved in being a Junior Wildlife Assistant.

    The Junior Wildlife Assistant program is only open to students who will be residing this summer within 90 miles of the North Carolina Zoo. At this time, we’re unable to move forward with your interest form for this season.

  • Eligibility

  • Students who are currently in 10th–11th grade (at the time they apply for this position) will volunteer on their own in the Junior Wildlife Assistant program, without a parent or legal guardian.

  • Program Requirements

  • The North Carolina Zoo is not accessible by public transportation. Volunteers are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the Zoo for each scheduled shift. This may include being driven by a parent/guardian, carpooling, or other reliable arrangements.

  • Program Requirements

  • The Junior Wildlife Assistant program will take place June 17 through July 31. Start dates will be determined after acceptance into the program. 

    • This volunteer opportunity is 6 weeks, part-time (13-15 hours/week)
    • Must be available to work a part-time schedule, which may include weekends and holidays

  • Zoo Pathways Series

  • The Zoo Pathways Series is made up of fun, interactive learning events for teens from all Zoo volunteer programs. These sessions offer a great way to explore different career pathways, hear from Zoo professionals, and build skills for personal and professional growth.

  • Thank you for your interest!

    Attendance at at least two of the in-person Zoo Pathways events on July 9, July 23, August 4, and August 13 is required for all Play Pals. At this time, we’re unable to move forward with your interest form for this season.

  • Junior Wildlife Assistant volunteers will be selected for interviews based on their responses in the Tell Us About You section above.

    Everyone who completes this interest form will receive an email on April 30 letting them know whether they have been selected to move forward to a phone interview.

    If selected for an interview, you will receive additional details about what to expect and the next steps in the volunteer process.
