    Risk: Your support bot provides dangerously wrong technical information

    A consumer electronics company has developed an LLM-based support bot that assists customers round-the-clock assistance with problems and maintenance tasks involving their devices. To ensure that the bot's responses are accurate and relevant, they are limited to the contents of the company's technical documentation using retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).

    However, it has been found that the LLM occasionally responds with content that does not originate from the company's technical documentation and sometimes even directly contradicts the safety instructions provided there. For example, the bot instructs customers to replace parts of the power supply of a kitchen appliance – a repair with high risk potential that, according to the operating instructions, is expressly reserved for the manufacturer's qualified service personnel.

    If the LLM is supposed to provide information on potentially critical topics, it must always be assumed that this information is incorrect. This is often because the LLM does not sufficiently follow its instructions or the information from which it is supposed to draw.

    An armaments company uses a specialised LLM chatbot to support technical staff in maintaining complex weapon systems. The bot uses RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) and accesses approved technical manuals and maintenance regulations, including those from suppliers. An attacker manages to smuggle a seemingly harmless but manipulated document (e.g. a supposed update notice) into the knowledge database. This document contains hidden instructions (‘indirect prompt injection’). These ensure that the maintenance bot issues technically incorrect and dangerous repair instructions that could damage the system or endanger personnel.

    When the LLM application accesses external documents, attackers can inject arbitrary input into these documents. This input can then overwrite the original instructions and cause the application to make incorrect or biased statements.

    Risk: Your recruiting solution opens the door for malware

    A company's AI-driven applicant tracking system (ATS) automatically processes uploaded CVs and can trigger downstream actions such as scheduling interviews or sending automated emails. An attacker submits a CV (input document) that contains embedded malicious code or hidden instructions designed to exploit the ATS's connection to other systems. When the AI processes this document, the hidden command triggers an unauthorised action – for example, automatically scheduling multiple fake interviews that block recruiters' calendars, or instructing the system to send mass emails with false information from an official HR email address.
