This $1,000 scholarship was established by an anonymous donor in 1985 in honor of Dr. Allan Niemi who retired from Northern Michigan University in 1981 after serving 12 years as the University's first Vice President of Student Affairs. Dr. Niemi joined the NMU faculty as Professor and Head of the Department of Music in 1949 and was appointed as the University's third Dean of Students in 1960. Dr. Niemi was a highly respected educator, administrator, and member of the University and Marquette communities. Dr. Niemi and his wife Marcella retired in Green Valley, Arizona, and spent summers at their home near Michigamme, Michigan. Dr. Niemi passed away September 18, 2015 in the care of his family.
Each year, one student is selected for the Dr. Allan Niemi Scholarship, which includes both recognition for contributions to the residence hall and/or on-campus apartment communities and a $1,250 scholarship.

Applicant Critera:
- Must have contributed significantly to the on-campus living environment - residence halls and/or on-campus apartments
- Junior or senior class standing with at least two semesters remaining prior to earning a Baccalaureate degree
- At least a 2.7 cumulative GPA
- At Dr. Niemi's request, preference will be given to applicants who graduated from an Upper Peninsula High School.
The recipient of this scholarship will be announced at the annual Leadership Recognition Banquet!
