OVERVIEW
Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is seeking a qualified and motivated individual for a Postdoctoral Scientist position in the research group of Dr. Julia Brown. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading key elements of an NSF-funded project that seeks to discover and characterize novel viruses and their microbial hosts within marine oxygen minimum zones in collaboration with a team from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. This position comes with a salary in the range of $60,000-$75,000 along with a generous benefit package.
The candidate will interrogate and analyze existing metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and single cell genomics data and facilitate the sequencing and analysis of virome samples collected from the three largest marine OMZs on the planet in order to characterize RNA viral diversity, function and host interactions. This position comes with the opportunity to lead and contribute to additional lab research into other areas of viral diversity, ecology and bioinformatics and provide mentorship to undergraduate student interns.
REQUIREMENTS:
- PhD in microbiology, virology, ecology, marine science, computer science, or other relevant field
- A record of excellence in both conducting and publishing original research
- Experience conducting bioinformatics-based research projects
- Molecular biology experience
- Prior bioinformatics experience including:
- experience working in an hoc environment
- proficiency in python and R
- experience with workflow management systems such as nextflow or snakemake.
- Prior experience working on viral search, discovery and taxonomic characterization
- Strong computational biology skills, including the ability to integrate ecological, environmental, and molecular data
