Join the Center for Just Journalism, Zealous, the Atlanta Community Press Collective and the Center for Civic Innovation (CCI) for a local reporting exchange: Reporting on Violence, the Legal System, and Housing in Atlanta — happening on Friday, March 6th at the CCI office at 460 Edgewood Ave from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Last July, a group of journalists, survivor-advocates, legal experts, and community members gathered in Atlanta to explore how local journalism can better reflect the realities of criminalized survival — and how we can build enduring relationships across movements to inform more nuanced, justice-oriented coverage on issues related to violence and the legal system.
Our next local reporting exchange in Atlanta will bring together journalists and community experts with the goal of generating more honest and collaborative stories about housing issues. Housing is foundational to the issues we discussed at our last gathering — housing instability aggravates both gender-based violence and justice system involvement, and conversely, gender-based violence and incarceration threaten people's access to safe housing. With the Georgia legislature once again considering HB 295 which would further criminalize homelessness, the stakes of this issue are particularly high.
This event is part of a broader effort to build sustained relationships between journalists and community members, grounded in the understanding that nuanced and accurate reporting relies on trust and accountability with the communities most impacted. Coming off our event last July, we hope to welcome new advocates and journalists into this space and build long-lasting relationships to shape future coverage on relevant issues.
Participants will hear from leading voices in the field during an expert panel, take part in community-centered small group discussions, and join a collaborative listening session designed to deepen our collective understanding of the legal system and housing access.
Lunch and a light breakfast will be provided. Space is limited, so please RSVP to reserve your spot. We will send out a more detailed agenda to registered participants ahead of the event.
