Dr. Richard "Richie" Hunley was the Educational Talent Search director at Berea College when he passed away unexpectedly in 2016 at the age of 36. He had previously served as the Director of Student Support Services at Lindsey Wilson College. Ritchie had served as Secretary and Vice President of KY TRIO.
Criteria for the Dr. Richard “Richie” Hunley Scholarship

APPLICANTS MUST BE
- Participant in an Eligible Program: Talent Search, UB, UBMS, VUB, EOC, SSS or McNair
- Admitted or currently enrolled at a postsecondary institution and plan to be enrolled the following semester (i.e. must be admitted and planning to attend college during the fall semester of the 2026-2027 academic year).
- BOTH low-income (based on federal TRIO guidelines) and first-generation.
Personal Essay. A personal essay (750 words max) based on “What does being the first in your family to attend college means to you? What obstacles/challenges have you overcome to get to where you are now? How will this scholarship help you achieve your goals?”
Financial Need (Need for Support/Other Funding Sources). Include a copy of the student's FAFSA Submission Summary (Formerly known as Student Aid Report or SAR)
DEADLINE: TRIO Nominator should submit no later than 4:00PM [CST] / 5:00 PM [EST] on Friday, March 27, 2026.
