Citizens Fire Academy Application

The Citizens Fire Academy teaches citizens about the philosophy, policies, and guiding principles of the Asheville Fire Department and its services to the community. It gives citizens an inside look at the challenges firefighters face daily. Citizens also have an opportunity to offer comments, ideas, and solutions.

This 2026 Academy lasts four consecutive weeks, consisting of three-hour classes held on Wednesday evenings, 5/20-6/10 from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm, with graduation on 6/11. This course will consist of basic classroom instruction, presentations, and demonstrations on topics such as the history of the AFD, Fire Marshal’s Office functions, Fire Prevention methods, Hazardous Materials mitigation, Rescue operations, Ladder operations, Engine operations, and an opportunity to ride on a fire truck. There will be some hands-on, physical activities planned for each class with varying abilities. If you have any physical limitations, please let us know. Participants are encouraged to attend all classes. The class location will change each week, as we will meet at different fire stations throughout the city.

The Citizens Fire Academy is designed to:
- Increase public awareness of fire department responsibilities and operations.
- Build a stronger relationship between the community and the Asheville Fire Department.
- Provide the public the opportunity for feedback and suggestions.
- Increase community support and awareness about the Asheville Fire Department operations through education and exchanging of ideas.
- Create responsible, well-informed citizens who influence public opinion on the Asheville Fire Department operations, practices, and services.

Citizens Fire Academy Liability Release Form

The Asheville Fire Department will make every effort to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for participants in its programs; however, we cannot guarantee that no injuries or damages will occur through participation in our program. We therefore require each participant to read and sign the following form before participating.

In consideration of permission to participate in the Asheville Fire Department Citizens Academy for, my heirs, executors, administrators, agents and assigns, do hereby voluntarily and knowingly release and discharge the City of Asheville, the Asheville Fire Department and hereby waive all claims, demands, damages, actions, causes of action or suits of any kind or nature and to hereby hold harmless the City of Asheville, the Asheville Fire Department, its employees, agents officers, present and future, known or unknown, from any and all causes of action, including, but not limited to, any act of negligence, or the results of any decision made in connection with my care and treatment arising out of my participation in the Citizens Fire Academy. In the event any action is brought against the City of Asheville, the Asheville Fire Department, its employees, officers, successors, assigns, agents and all others, collectively or individually, pursuant to any claims released herein, that I agree that presentation of this Liability Release Form constitutes a complete and affirmative defense to said claim; and further, I agree that a court of competent jurisdiction shall dismiss said claim with prejudice. I also acknowledge that I have no limiting medical conditions and I am fully capable of participating in the Asheville Fire Departments Citizen Fire Academy.

By my signature below, I certify that all the information and statements I have provided is true and complete to the best of my knowledge; and authorize any background and criminal records check by the Asheville Fire Department. I understand that any misstatement of material facts in this application will be cause for disqualification from participation in the Citizens Fire Academy.
