  • This agreement registers you for independent studio access at BaseArt. BaseArt provides shared ceramics studio facilities for makers working independently. Sessions are self-guided and not taught classes. You must have basic ceramics experience to work safely.

  • 1. Parties

    This Studio Access Registration & Agreement (shall be referred as "Agreement" hereinafter) has been signed by and between the following parties;

  • Participant

    Please complete the following section in full. All information kept private and confidential.
  • In the event of an emergency

    Please provide us with a contact name and number (next of kin)
  • Nature of Access

  • BaseArt provides access to shared workspace and equipment only (you can bring your own tools if you wish).

    There is minimal teaching or supervision included in studio sessions.

    Staff are present for studio management and kiln operation only.

    You are responsible for your own work and safe use of tools and equipment.

  • BOOKINGS & TIME USE

    Bookings are time-limited.
  • Your session includes:


    • Setup
    • Making time
    • Clearing your space

    • Cleaning (we allow up to 15 minutes at the end of your session - please do NOT overrun)

     Late arrival does not extend your session.

  • CLEANING & SHARED SPACE

    Users must leave the studio space ready for the next maker.
  • This includes:


    Cleaning surfaces (clay/glazing mat, table surface, chair)

    Tools (wash ALL tools you've handled/used and leave to dry on the draining board)

    Mopping spills (please use blue gloves provided and blue towel for minor spills and alert a member of BaseArt immediately for any broken glass or spilled glazes/oxides etc.)


    Wipe off as much dry clay from tools and mats (and put in bins provided) keeping sinks clear as possible of clay debris.

    Dispose of any dry clay / cracked or damaged clay in the bins provided.

    Tools must be washed in the main workshop sink (and never washed in the main kitchen or bathroom sinks).

    Keep to your designated space:

    You will be designated a studio desk space.  You should keep all clay, tools and anything you make within this desk space and not encroach on other desk areas.

    Coats should be put on the back of your chair, or hung on the coat rack provided.

    Bags/handbags should be stored under your desk (please ensure handles of bags are upright to avoid a trip hazard). 

  • FIRING POLICY

    To ensure your pottery/ceramics are fired correctly, safely and to prevent damage to the kilns, we ask you to abide by the following rules:
  • Kilns are operated only by BaseArt staff (out of hours for correct ventilation and safety).  Please do not enter the designated kiln area (marked with a red line) for your safety.

    ALL Work submitted for firing must:

    • Work to be bone dry - please allow a minimum of 1 week (7 days) before first firing
    • Be correctly labelled (please complete the firing slip provided and place with your work on the firing shelf)
    • Be suitable thickness (work must not be overly thick or hollow without vent holes)
    • Use appropriate clay - earthenware at the moment (items must be made from clay that matches the kiln firing temperature)
    • When using your own glaze, please complete the firing slip with the correct firing temperature for your glaze - 1040 or 1160 degrees.
    • ENSURE THE BOTTOMS OF YOUR WORK ARE CLEANED AND FREE FROM GLAZE - we reserve the right to refuse firing if this is not done.

    BaseArt may refuse unsafe work.

    Ceramic processes are unpredictable. Breakage, cracking, glaze defects and kiln damage can occur if you do not follow the firing rules.

  • CHARGES

    Studio booking fee covers workspace access only and use of oxides, underglaze and clear glaze.
  • Additional charges apply for:

    Clay:

    This can be purchased from BaseArt (earthenware clay) in the following quantities:

    1/4 bag (£6.00)

    1/2 bag (£11.00)

    1 bag (£22.00)

    Firing Charges:

    Firing is charged depending on the weight of your work at final firing.  The firing charge is 50p per 100gms (final weight).

    ** Prices may fluctuate. Current prices are displayed in the studio**

  • SAFETY

    Ceramics studios contain dust and sharp tools.
  • You agree to:

    • Use equipment you understand
    • Follow BaseArt instructions and rules
    • Wear suitable clothing (example: closed toe shoes)

    Use masks in well ventilated areas of the studio, and gloves provided when using oxides and glazes.

    BaseArt is not responsible for harm or injury caused by misuse of equipment or chemical products.

  • LIABILITY

    You participate at your own risk.
  • BaseArt is not liable for:

    • Damage to work during drying or firing
    • Personal injury from improper tool or chemical use
    • Loss or damage to personal items
  • COMMUNITY & BEHAVIOUR POLICY

  • BaseArt is a shared creative space. Everyone must feel safe and respected while working in the studio.

    The following behaviour is NOT permitted under any circumstances:


    • abusive or aggressive language towards others
    • discriminatory, racist remarks or comments
    • harassment or intimidation
    • unwanted criticism of others’ work or ability
    • behaviour that disrupts others’ use of the studio

    Studio users must communicate respectfully with members of the BaseArt team and other makers at all times.

    BaseArt reserves the right to end a session or refuse future bookings if behaviour is considered inappropriate or makes others uncomfortable. No refund will be issued in these circumstances.
