FAQs
We will update these FAQs as new questions come in. As this is a developing legacy project, not all details are finalised yet, but we will communicate openly and keep our community informed as plans progress.
Q: What are all the elements we are looking to improve at the Symmonds Field and why?
A: Following Elements:
- Resurface the current hard-courts - surface and fences - Additional Capacity Increase
- New cricket facilities
- New bathroom and clubhouse facilities
- Rehabilitate the sports field
Potential enhancements:
• Field overuse relief: swap asphalt for astro on courts so that field sports can overflow to courts. Basically turn courts into multisport fields including netball and tennis.
• Spectator facility establishment: Spectator stands, scoreboards, coffee shop / clubhouse
WHY? While always prioritising the safety of our children and community, we recognise that as Camps Bay Primary School and the wider community continue to grow, our facilities should grow with them. We aim to offer world-class sports and recreational facilities, allowing us to proudly host other schools and welcome our community and international visitors to enjoy our recreational spaces.
Q: Why did the school choose the Symmonds Field as the big project to rally behind this year?
A: As we celebrate 120 years of the school, it felt like the right moment to identify a meaningful legacy project that could benefit both the school and the wider community.
Symmonds Field emerged as the natural choice. It is a well-loved space with great potential, and the scale of restoration and renewal required makes it a project worthy of the whole community coming together behind one shared goal.
Large-scale fundraising of this nature is also relatively new for Camps Bay Primary. We see the Symmonds Field project as an important starting point — a meaningful kick-off that can help build momentum for future asset and capital projects the school will need in the years ahead.
Importantly, most of the work focuses on restoring and renewing existing elements of the field, allowing the project to begin as early as 2026 without complex structural approval processes.
Q: What does the timeline for this project look like?
A: We will provide monthly updates to stakeholders on our fundraising progress. Status September 2026: Synsports has been selected as Service Provider and appointed! Actual Phase 1 Implementation start on the Field during this December / Jan school break.
Q: Why R1.2 Million and is this enough?
Whilst R1.2 Million will only cover a part of the elements we have in the BIGGER plan, we believe this is an achieavble Fundraising Target for the school and community for this year and to Kick-Start a substantial part of the project.
Q: What happens if we raise less than the R1.2 Million?
A: Should we raise less than the full amount required - we can still roll out restoration & renewal on parts of the field - and move the remainder of the works to 2027.
Q: What does the School's Fundraising Efforts this year entail? I.E. is this the main event or will there be other requests for Donations?
A: The School is standing united behind the Symmonds Field Campaign as this year's main event. There won't be any other significant fundraising efforts or donation requests.

As with many great school initiatives, the strength lies in the community coming together. If you would like to contribute your time, skills, or ideas, we would love to hear from you. Please reach out to the team at projects@campsbayprimary.co.za — extra hands are always welcome.
Q: Tell me more about the School's heritage?
A: On Monday, 28 May 1906 the first 7 pupils were enrolled with Mrs Edith M. Adcock as principal and only teacher. These seven pupils included one boy in Std 4, one boy and one girl in Sub B, and two boys and two girls in Sub A. By 1912 the school had grown to 42 children and a new school building was erected. This charming stone building is part of the present Camps Bay Preparatory School building. The school continued to grow and in 1955, they moved to a new building – the present Camps Bay Primary building – with Mr Botha as principal. The school now had nearly 300 pupils in the primary classes and this is when the High School split away.
Over the years several new facilities were added to the existing Primary School building: a heated, enclosed swimming pool, 5-a-side soccer court, computer laboratory, a library and a sports field on the Symmonds Field.
The past 116 years of excellence in education have been the product of many dynamic and visionary principals, dedicated and innovative teachers, incredibly hard-working support and office staff, enthusiastic and talented pupils as well as an actively involved and supportive parent body.
