Charisma SPD – Hazard Communication (HazCom) & SDS Training (Required)
Complete this training on HazCom and SDS before your SPD/healthcare assignment. All sections are required.
This training covers Hazard Communication (HazCom) and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for Sterile Processing and healthcare environments. It explains labeling, SDS use, safe chemical handling, and spill/exposure response. Completion is required before assignment.

SECTION 2 — Training Content
Review the HazCom and SDS training information below.
A) What is HazCom?
- OSHA Hazard Communication standard requires workers be informed about chemical hazards in the workplace.
- You have a right to know what chemicals you use and how to use them safely.
B) Labels and GHS pictograms
- Read container labels; never use unlabeled chemicals.
- GHS pictograms include: flame, corrosion, exclamation mark, health hazard, gas cylinder, environment. Always follow facility labeling.
C) What is an SDS and where to find it
- SDS provides: hazards, PPE, first aid, handling/storage, spill response, disposal.
- SDS is available electronically or in binders per facility policy.
D) Key SDS sections to know
- Section 1 Identification
- Section 2 Hazards
- Section 4 First Aid
- Section 6 Accidental release measures (spills)
- Section 7 Handling & storage
- Section 8 Exposure controls/PPE
- Section 10 Stability/reactivity
- Section 13 Disposal (as applicable)
E) Safe handling and storage
- Use only approved chemicals for the task; follow dilution and contact time.
- Never mix chemicals (especially bleach + ammonia or acids).
- Keep lids on containers; store chemicals per label.
- Use ventilation as required.
F) PPE and exposure prevention
- Wear gloves/eye protection/apron/face shield based on splash and chemical hazard.
- Wash hands after chemical handling.
G) Spill and exposure response (basic)
- Stop work and notify supervisor.
- For skin contact: rinse with water; remove contaminated clothing.
- For eye exposure: flush at eyewash station immediately.
- Follow facility spill kit procedure; do not improvise.
H) Disposal
- Dispose of chemical waste per facility policy; do not pour unknown chemicals down drains.
I) Reporting
- Report chemical spills/exposures/incidents to onsite supervisor and Charisma SPD.
- Contacts: Office 914-201-3382; Mobile 347-324-1759.
SECTION 3 — Knowledge Check
Answer all questions below. Only one answer is correct for each.
1) HazCom is:
*
A standard that requires workers be informed about chemical hazards
A cleaning schedule
A timekeeping rule
A uniform policy
2) SDS stands for:
*
Safety Data Sheet
Sterile Data System
Safety Disinfection Standard
Supply Delivery Sheet
3) You should use chemicals that are:
*
Labeled and approved for the task per facility policy
Unlabeled if you recognize smell
Mixed for extra strength
Borrowed from home
4) SDS tells you:
*
Hazards, PPE, first aid, spill response, handling/storage
Only the price
Only who ordered it
Only schedule
5) If a chemical splashes into your eyes you should:
*
Flush immediately at eyewash and report
Wait 10 minutes
Wipe with dry towel only
Keep working
6) Mixing bleach with ammonia is:
*
Dangerous and prohibited
Recommended
Safe if diluted
Required in decontam
7) GHS pictograms help you:
*
Recognize chemical hazards quickly
Decide lunch time
Track overtime
Replace training
8) For a chemical spill you should:
*
Stop work, notify supervisor, follow spill kit/SDS instructions
Mop quickly without PPE
Ignore small spills
Take it outside
9) Disposal should follow:
*
Facility policy and SDS guidance
Personal preference
Pour everything down drain
Throw in regular trash always
10) PPE selection for chemicals should be based on:
*
SDS and task splash risk
Color of gloves
Time of day
Who is watching
SECTION 4 — Attestation & Signature
Read each statement and acknowledge by checking the box. Signature and date are required.
