SB 936 (Blakespear & Umberg) Nitrous oxide: sales Coalition Letter - SUPPORT
  • SB 936 (Blakespear & Umberg) Nitrous oxide: sales Coalition Letter - SUPPORT

Please use this form to join a growing coalition supporting SB 936 (Blakespear and Umberg), legislation that would prohibit retail sales of large nitrous oxide tanks in California while maintaining exemptions for legitimate medical, dental, culinary, and automotive uses. Nitrous oxide tanks, often marketed as “whippets,” are increasingly being abused as a recreational inhalant and are creating serious public health, safety, and waste management challenges across California. Local governments and waste facilities are also seeing a surge in these cylinders entering the waste stream. Many household hazardous waste programs report residents dropping off multiple tanks at a time, with disposal costs often exceeding the purchase price, placing growing financial pressure on local programs and exposing workers to safety risks. Momentum on this issue is building. The San Francisco Chronicle recently reported that San Francisco is now considering a local sales ban ordinance, further underscoring the urgency for a statewide solution. San Francisco will be the fourth county to ban the sale of nitrous oxide tanks if it passes, following Orange, Humboldt, and San Mateo counties. Read the letter here: https://bit.ly/4rSLAlW. (We will add logos and signatures to this letter continuously as the bill moves through the legislative process.)
